The John Hillcoat/Nick Cave partnership came up trumps with The Proposition, but if all the reviews are along these lines, I'd be more inclined to read the book (one of Cormac McCarthy's that I haven't yet read) than watch the film.

The book was good, if a little repetitive, found food, hold up for a bit, move on, find food, hold up for a bit...

The criticism I have heard is that Cormac McCarthy's prose is what makes the book so good (gave it to my son for Christmas, the novel, but haven't read it yet) and what's left doesn't work as a film very well. I still might go see it though.

I saw Sherlock Holmes over christmas and I thought it was pretty good, very entertaining.

Traditional Sherlock Holmes it is not though. Basically they've got a film about an investigator and they've attached the name of the most famous detective so that people know what the films about. Oh and he has a sidekick.

I watched Whiteout last night. It started with Kate Beckinsale stripping off for a shower. That was the high point of the whole film. Avoid.

I just stumbled across this forum and although I haven't read through it all yet, wanted to chime in as a "bird of a feather". The above list includes 3 of my favorite movies (Bruges, Amelie & Pan), and another fav is mentioned on the page (Let the Right One In). I don't often find people who so casually mention three such great movies in a single sentence (and yes, saw the other two and liked them, but don't necessarily make my top 10).

Can you believe this?

Peter Dinklage actually plays the same character as the 2007 movie.

Managed to catch the following movie a few nights ago;

wAz

I was expecting this to be, at best, an above average but ultimately forgettable thriller however it turned out to be something rather special.

Unquestionably worthy of a 'Razorsharp' (c) rating, I strongly recommend tracking down a copy of this movie ASAP 8-) ...

Caught this trailer a while before you posted it, was never a big fan of the A-Team & can't say that I'm particularly looking forward to it but Liam Neeson may well be able to turn this into a pleasant surprise. If we're actually going to get some confirmed kills from this 'big screen' adaptation then it won't have to do much more to surpass the original television series :lol: .

Incidentally, for those of you that can't enough of movies with an 'A-Team' vibe, you might want to check out the following forthcoming release;

The Losers

Wow :shock: .

District 9 is quite simply one of the best movies I've seen in a very long time so I strongly recommend that you make the effort to catch this on the big screen 8-) ...

Just a quick reminder that District 9 is now available to purchase on both DVD & Blu-Ray :wink: ...

Had not read much about this so we were not expecting the documentary style, but we were riveted, a very good film, my first 5/5 rating on Lovefilm in fact 8-)

Anyone else seen the Romanian film, Police Adjective? Not for everybody I'm sure, but a brilliant portrait of bureaucracy crushing individual discretion. It's painfully slow moving at times, depicting a boring and frustrating investigation of a minor drug case by a Romanian police detective with a conscience. Only movie I've ever seen which ends with a dynamic grammatical struggle with a dictionary, turning on the meaning of 'conscience,' 'law' and 'police.' The Romanians have a unique and perversely ironic sense of humour. The bad guy is the same unforgettable actor who played the wicked abortionist in Four Months, Three Weeks and Two Days.

In a complete change of mood, the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland looks a feast for the eyes. Everyone will be looking out for Johnny Depp, Helena B-C and Anne Hathaway, but Alice is played by Mia Wasikowska, who was brilliant in the HBO TV series In Treatment shown on Sky Arts (also starring Gabriel Byrne - I started a thread on it but no one replied, so I'm assuming I'm the only one on Fiso who watched it). So that's a great cast, accomplished director, fantastic visuals and a classic story. It can't fail, can it?

Watched 'Franklyn' the other night on DVD.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08Nj6a8U2uk

Probably a not very well known film that was realeased in 2008. Its tinged with fantasy as it partly set in a futuristic world, and partly in modern day London, following the lives of 4 main characters, and its not initially made clear as to how they are connected. By the end of the film things click into place, although there's still plenty for you to ponder once the film has finished. If you're going to watch this its probably best you don't learn to much about the plot, and you'll probably feel a 2nd or more viewings will help you fully understand whats gone on. A thinking man's film. Enjoy!

Oh, and Eva Green is one of the central characters......

I'm confident that this movie will be enjoyed by anyone that enjoys comic books or comic book related flicks, personally I thought it was very decent indeed but will be interested to see what others think (as yet I've only read positive reviews for Kick-Ass)...

It came out in 2002, but I have just seen the Spoke Jonze movie, Apadtation. Absolutely brilliant and hysterically funny satire. Story of the film's screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's tortured and neurotic attempts to adapt New Yorker magazine writer Susan Orlean's book, The Orchid Thief, into a movie, without turning it into a corrupted Hollywood film. The twists and turns are amazing as we follow Kaufman's real and film life narrative, the narrative in his ever evolving screen play, and the narrative of the film itself as they all play against each other. There is so much going on it is difficult to summarize but I laughed out loud throughout and my girlfriend and I spent hours talking about it afterwards. Kaufman and Jonze also combined on the weird Being John Malcovich. Anyone else seen this crazy film?

Surprised that you hadn't seen this one before, Pouzar. :shock: I caught it, and loved it, when it came out, back in the days (before kids) when my wife and I went to the movies nearly every week. Great performances from Nicolas Cage & Meryl Streep, I recall. Also enjoyed Being John Malkovich, but haven't seen Where The Wild Things Are as yet.

My focus in recent years has been world art cinema and classical Hollywood films, AK. I'm taking a course on contemporary Hollywood cinema which has ramped up my appreciation of American filmmakers struggling to make intelligent films that can reach and stimulate audiences in a jaded, post-modern world. I certainly prefer Adaptation to the tiresome 'lets regress into childhood (ET) or idiocy (Forrest Gump) approach.' I liked Spielberg's AI, loved watching Lynch's Blue Velvet again and was impressed by Dark City, a superior and more daring version of The Matrix, which I also like. Adaptation is my favourite however.

Saw The Ghost Writer yesterday in Barcelona. Quite a good film from Roman Polanski. Not up with Chinatown but first rate despite a silly ending. It is the story of a ghost writer, Ewan MacGregor, hired to help a former British PM, featuring a very Blair-like Pierce Brosnan, write his memoirs. It turns into a first rate thriller with some nice Hicthcockian touches, including the smart, innocent person pulled into international intrique. Recommended.

In the World Cup Movies art house thread last year, you had this to say about Blue Velvet:

Pouzar wrote:
The Elephant Man does not seem typical of Lynch's work because it is not pretentious rubbish. Like Dune. And Twin Peaks. And Blue Velvet. Okay, at that point I stopped watching.

Now you say you loved watching it again. Could that be because of my robust defence of Blue Velvet on the art house thread? Do you now agree with me that it's not "pretentious rubbish"? :wink:

Polanski finished the film while under a form of house arrest. A local island stands in for the one in America.
Billy - I always liked Blue Velvet but intense study of it again and reflections on the rest of Lynch`s work convinced me I was wrong about him and that I had seriously underestimated him as an artist. His crazy troubling vision of a terrible nightmarish world along side beautiful innocence is a valid, if disturbing, picture of modern life. I am not afraid to say when I am wrong. I wondered when you would spot my post and remind me of my earlier comment. Good on you. Of course I haven`t seen Mulholland Drive and a few of his other films, so I hope to watch them this summer. 61 and still learning.

Good man Pouzar! You should love Mulholland Drive. I recommend you see it twice, because unless you're incredibly astute you won't realise what's going on until near the end. Then when you watch it again you'll think it even better than the first time. It's one of my favourite films, and you'll live with it for a few days after seeing it.

A form of house arrest? The kind that allows him to finish a Hollywood film with major stars that will make millions. Delightful!
