Big time, I've got loads of time off in January and February to go hammers at it as well. I'm getting into interviews now (thanks in no small part to Richt's help with my CV), so it should only be a matter of time.

Reviewed the 10 from last year - only managed 50% of them.
Added 1 which is to race against both my kids (aged 29 and 31) in a local 10km Hill race in February. I should finish it if fit but won't get near them!

New one is not to mess with internet router settings - I have been off line since Christmas after trying to connect a new Kindle via wifi!

I don't do resolutions but I am doing that one. Blocked somebody too to make it worth resoluterising about.

I usually make trivial promises to myself such as "less drink" or "more exercise" but this year, mine is to stop wishing my life away waiting for the next thing to happen. I am going to stop wishing it was Friday and slugging it out for 4 days only for the quickest 2 days of the week to kick me face first back into Monday. I am not going to focus on my next holiday but my next few hours off work.

Let me ask you something which I asked myself today when I was watching some old Premiership highlights and is something we, as football fans, can relate to. Does it seem like 8 years ago since Chelsea were taken over by Roman Abramovich???

The reason I ask is because to me it seems like 2 or 3 years. And I asked myself how old I was then, how old I am now and how old I will be in another 8 years. And then I asked myself if I would be happy to achieve the same in the next 8 years as I have done in the last 8 years. For some the answer will be yes but I reckon the majority will say no.

Good post TYM;

Thinking about it has left me wondering (and also patting myself on the back).

I've actually done quite a lot in the last 8 years (although not sure I've 'achieved' anything). I'm sure the next 8 will be massively eventful (but for very different reasons).

Target no.1 - to still have a job come summer :) (although probably something out of my control)!

To work harder at enjoying my work.

Having gone from banking where money was no object and training was available for every little whim, to education where management aren't as clued up and unions are incredibly confrontational, I've found myself slipping into doing the minimum acceptable to get the job done. And I've not enjoyed it one bit!

So I'm badly paid and have no career prospects? Doesn't mean I can't set myself technical challenges and start enjoying my work again :-)

Give some of your female students a good lecture in the stock room cupboard.

I wish less people's resolution was to join a gym - it was ruddy packed last night!

I'm fortunate in some ways that I had kids very young (hint: my youngest will be 18 when I am 41...) but managed to make it work so most of my peers are 10 years my senior however I have recently had the same experience as you. My last job lasted 7 years during which time I took one exam and barely increased my salary or relevant experience. It took the company going bust to make me see that it was pretty much 7 dead years. Quite a sickening realisation as I'm sure you discovered!

I've now got a rolling 2 year plan with my wife that whilst not a NYE resolution should help make sure we keep on track.

Not just work wise Doc, but in my life in general. I wish I hadn't wasted so many weeks just like a robot, waiting for spring, then waiting for holidays, then waiting for Christmas. All the while in between just waiting for Saturday. I'm going to make sure I get out of the house at least once a week Monday-Thursday to do something I really enjoy rather than just sitting around waiting for work the next day.

I'm glad things turned around for you and that you have some decent direction! All the best for 2012!

I'm guilty of the same, drifting from one bank holiday to another, waiting for BST or weekends etc. Like you say, I was so focused on hitting the next minor "free time" goal I managed to miss 7 whole years. Controversially FF was partly to blame I think. I spent so long waiting for transfer windows, new season starts and moaning about prizes that I convinced myself that I was actually doing something.
