this thread is a place where you can highlight movies that haven't made it into the next round but really should have (in your opinion anyway) I'll probably end up using this as the template for the "bazza's special / wildcard" nominations thread for the final 4 places of the final 64.... but only once we know what 60 films will already be through.

feel free to add a bit of banter, and don't count the quotes above as nominations  .....

I wondered who the other vote for Rififi was from, M-Boy! I'm not surprised really, it's not well-known, but i would urge any FISOers into film noir or gangsters to check it out, one of my favourite films ever.

I was gutted that my all-time favourite film CLOCKWISE went out so early.

The fact is a lot of the greatest films ever made are older, foreign or really art house and few people on FISO have watched them, so they can hardly vote for them. I have heard great things about Rififi, for example, and don't doubt that M-Boy and Fancy Dan are correct, but I can't vote for a film I've never seen.
In the last few days I've seen two certifiably great films; Sullivan's Travels, a brilliant 1941 comedy about Hollywood and its pretensions, and Tokyo Story, a profound 1953 Japanese film about the painful distance between generations, featuring an older couple who travel far to Tokyo to visit their children. I doubt more than a handful of people on here have ever heard of them, let alone seen them, but that is life. Unless someone is a very serious film buff, or just happens to stumble onto one of these films on TV some night, how are you going to know about them?
The answer is to just accept that most posters will only know the popular films of recent years and nominate and vote for them. How could it realistically be otherwise? The good news is that with people describing some very interesting sounding films, Billy's recommendation of Tsotsi (can't remember the spelling) is a prime example, and the reminder about Rififi is another, I will look harder for those films and watch them. And others will identify movies that interest them and check them out. This crazy World Cup has a lot of us talking about movies and why we like or dislike them, which is great. It's also keeping us entertained until football returns! In the end it is a lot of fun, which is what matters most.

The Incredible Shrinking Vote

I loved Clockwise too - but Comedy is a tough group. I couldn't squeeze it into my Top 5 (and it wouldn't make my Top 10 comedies either, come to think of it).

Must admit I've never seen Riffi. Will look out for it.

PS Hear hear to what Pouzar's just said :)

I voted for Clockwise too, shame it did'nt make it.

Is there a modern film bias? Seems like the newer the film, the fresher it is in people memories, so they vote for it.

A number of Studio Ghibli films probably split the vote - I voted for Princess Mononoke, which is their masterpiece IMO. But if it hadn't been on the list Spirited Away would probably have got my vote.

Totally agree Dixie .. One of the best action movies around, but should come up in Bazza's special category ... and just re-released on DVD - got my Father's Day order in as my video copy is worn through.

Surely a feature of any world cup is the possibility of a surprise early exit from a fancied contender. I don't recall any world cup with a "second chance sunday" feature...
