right folks, that's the end of all the nominations, I've got lists over the 25 genres plus the special one - adding up the number of films nominated in each category comes to a whopping 1445 films (not all seperate films though i.e. about 7 of those are Annie Hall over 7 different categories!).

3 questions -
how many polls do you want to see a day??
how long do you think the poll should be open?? bear in mind this'll take friggin ages to complete
In what order shall I run the polls, least through to most nominations, or vice versa?

bear in mind I'll omit films from any list of nominations if it already makes it through to the last 64 via another genre, the "specials" thread will be last.
here's the genres, how many films to choose from, and how many go through to the final 64, note I still have to read back through comments to see what films to omit, and any film that qualifies in one category will be ommited from the others.

special 113 4
Comedy 87 4
Thrillers 84 4
Drama 79 4
Sci-fi 71 3
Horror 70 3
chickflick 65 3
Animation 61 3
Art house 61 3
Action / adventure 57 3
War 55 3
Foreign language 54 3
Biographical 54 3
sports 50 2
Musical 49 2
Childrens / family 48 2
literary classics adaptations 48 2
History 47 2
Gangster 46 2
romantic 45 2
Western 44 2
Fantasy 37 1
road movies 36 1
Documentary 34 1
Martial arts 26 1
Graphic Novel 24 1

a) all three polls or four polls for the big genres on one day. i.e. all four Drama polls on one day and nothing else, then all four Comedy polls on the next day, then Thrillers or whatever. That would be thirteen days. Then group the smaller genres: have Sports and Musicals on the next day, Childrens and Literary on the day after, etc. Finally, the five smallest genres on one day.
b) don't know. A week, maybe?
c) Most through least, I think. That will retain interest at the start when the effort is required. With Specials last.

Agree with M-Boy on all points:

a) all three polls or four polls for the big genres on one day. i.e. all four Drama polls on one day and nothing else, then all four Comedy polls on the next day, then Thrillers or whatever. That would be thirteen days. Then group the smaller genres: have Sports and Musicals on the next day, Childrens and Literary on the day after, etc. Finally, the five smallest genres on one day.
b) don't know. A week, maybe?

c) Most through least, I think. With Specials last.

But, it's important to have the main films seen in the major areas like sci-fi/Thriller/Comedy/Gangster before the smaller ones.

If you have a film like 2001 under Arthouse (as someone nominated it), it would probably gain the vote in Arthouse (thus preventing a real arthouse movie from progressing. In this instance we must vote on sci-fi before Arthouse.

Just get on with it!

Are the big categories having heats and finals??

As it is the off-season all votes must stay open a few days. No harm in starting some each day so some are on Day 1, some on Day 2 etc etc. Would also keep the interest up if there are some winners and something new each day.

The main thing is chopping down to 64 as soon as posisble. Nobody cares about qualifiers (anybody watch saturday's game live?) just get us to the finals!

Top work though Bazza :D

well the big categories will have to have 4 polls as we're limited to 25 per poll, then I'll combine the 4 lots of winners into a final poll to find the final 4 that go through into the last 64.

I'll maybe make it 5 days per poll to speed it up slightly, but not much else I can do!

I think you will have to give 3 or 4 votes to each person, or it will get very tactical.

If 4 films can get through from a category then we should have 4 votes each. 3 through equals 3 votes.

All will be very tactical for those who care. Probably worth making the votes trasferrable to allow a different set of tactics to just waiting til the end and voting for your favourite of those with a chance.

Good point.

Should we have a rule where you can't vote for any film more than once in any one round? That would make people think carefully about which genre a certain film most obviously and naturally belongs (because that will be the genre it has the most chance of getting through in).

well as I said in one of the threads I'll probably have to end up putting it through to the final poll now along with 16 funny films as it was my balls up. so we'll be picking 4 from 17..... unless it qualifies on it's own accord!

it'll be touch and go, but I'll try get it finished soon as.

ideas for last 64 anyone?

we could have 8 groups of 8 with 4 going through,
then 4 groups of 8 with 4 going through
then 8x head to head,
4x head to head,
semi final,
final.

run each stage on the same day for about 2 or 3 days and should be wrapped up by the 22nd July.

Got to be straight knockout. Film v Film. Good v Evil. Cowboys v Indians. Dark side v Light side. Kramer v Kramer. Police Academy v Assignment Miami Beach.

I think we should have a group stage for the last 64 - an individual poll comparing each film against each of the other films in their groups of 8. That will get the truest result.

How about a final poll including all those films that lost out on qualification due to appearing on more than one list and getting a diltued score that would otherwise have put them through.

Might save Barry a headache with the inevitable duplicate listings due to slightly different names?

Since this is a World Cup it should remain a group competition until we get to the last 16, at which point it should become a sudden-death knockout.

What interests me about this whole exercise is that we should get to the point where we can say, these are the best 16 films according to fiso posters. Barry's task is to decide what is the most accurate way of identifying those final 16. And IMO the answer to that is not sudden death at the last 64.
