Got to confess I'm starting to get a small thing going for these delicious miracles of nature, particularly at the daft prices Asda and Morrisons seem keen on selling them at.

I live 3 min cycling distance away from a medium sized Asda and a further 3 mins or so from a large Morrisons. Both stock copious amounts of this delicious fruit and seem to charge the same price: £1.

Now, for me, I reckon that's extortionate. Especially as they're never ripe at that price!!!

Just the other day, at Asda, I picked up 3 at 20p each (a saving of £2.40. ). The first was quite delicious, but the second I had (today) was still a little tough (ie. unripe). I managed to finish it of course. :D The third, I'll hang onto for another day or two, I suspect, before tucking in.

Morrisons had one reduced to clear at 50p but only one left. However, it felt like a right juicebag! I didn't know whether the contents would be rotten / fermented so either way, I chose not to bother with it.

Do Morrisons / Asda know what they're doing with mangoes? I mean, who'd buy them when they're practically wooden at £1 each?

Anyone else like them? Recipes to share?

I expect they'd go well with ice cream but I suspect summer's a bit late this year and may not be bothering at all.

edit: Just thought I'd point out, it wasn't ME who went and hyperlinked all the A S D A s!!! ;)

I did a little research on them Shogun and found there was quite a degree of difference between the different types (unlike carrots, say, which always taste the same). Some are quite crap (it would appear) but others, otoh, are quite wonderful.

I urge you to give them another go. :D

The skins, which I've "tasted" ;) can sometimes give people a reaction similar to that of poison ivy (which they're supposedly quite related to), so if you've sensitive skin, caution is advised where the peel is concerned.

But the fruit... if you see one in your local Asda at 20p a pop... could provide the most fun you've had since Arsenal won at the weekend.

Hope you give 'em another go! ;)

edit: And they're very nutritious - much more than an orange for example! 8-)

Mango Chili salsa is a classic that is great with fish ( we had it with Talapia a while back, fish was meh tbh though), from memory:

ripe mango cubed
thinly sliced red chili
extra virgin olive oil
fresh coriander
teaspoon of honey
dash of soy or salt
pepper

thats about it, lovely!

Made a mango chili condiment sauce last night:

5 Habenero chilli
1 onion
half bulb of garlic
tsp of garamasala
bit of ginger
mango (cheated, tinned :| )
couple of slices of pineapple
250ml cider vinegar
juice of 1 lime
salt

fry onion, garlic then add garamasala once golden. add chilli/mango vinegar etc. boil away for 10mins more. Blend and pour into sterilised jars. serve sparingly  didn't taste as nice as Encona tbh, might need some work

Love em - but what is the best way to maximise the fruit extraction?

I peel with a potato peeler and then randomly hack away until I have heap of fruit and then I sort of chew away at the big stone in the middle until I am a bit sticky. Kind of works - but any tips?

I would imagine thats about the best way, one of the reasons why I dont eat them on a regular basis tbh, too messy..

I think the best way (although I'm usually found eating the dried stuff) is to carve off both sides (along the stones flat sides) and then do your best with the rest. The main two bits can then be scored and popped out like you might with melons leaving perfect juicy squares.

You need to make about 4-5 cuts down to the skin in both directions, before you push them "concave", then they are easy to eat without wastage. But when eating the particularly juicy ones, you should be prepared for "drips" onto your self and clothing.

I've been reliably informed by my wife that the main two bits you cut off are commonly known as "cheeks" and that the best way to eat mangoes is in the bath. That is all.

In our house we call it "doing the hedgehog". When you cut away a big chunk, including skin, score into cubes (don't pierce the skin) and then turn inwards, so the flesh is showing out like a cubed hedgehog. Then just use your knife to get the fruit off the skin. We make mango smoothies virtually every morning in the summer. One mango makes 2 large smoothies and a great mess (have some toothpicks/dental floss available) as eating around the stone usually gets between your teeth. Not great for a morning meeting!
