Hi Groomyd

Yes I am from Bury - suggest your guy's mileage expenses and London weighting might push his price up a bit compared to one's round here 8-)

The missus wants to go to one of the loft companies but I just feel that they just subcon everything which is what you are paying for - I am swaying towards a one-man band but just struggling for recommendations

Two have been done on our street - one ended up with the the fire brigade out after a bit of a mishap with a grinder and some insulation :( - the other made two appointments to see me and never turned up :(

The only other person who I know has had one done would not recommend his company . so am struggling for the famous recommendation route

Anyway , are you glad you had it done ?

Graham

Its not done yet!!!!!

Ask anyone who quotes you for the names and phone numbers of a couple of people who have had them done then cal them and see ifthey would not mind a quick chat.

Do 2 as often they have 'good one' to show you.

just spotted this today ! Was there always a DIY forum ?

Anyways got an attic conversion done last year. Can't advise on cost as i'm not in the UK.

A few things that come to mind that may help . . .
(I'm not a builder so will stand corrected on any points below)

Stairs ! We lost no space in box room or boiler as builder built twisty stairs. Hard to describe but 2 turn stairs (Not spiral). So up a few steps turn right on a spiral 4 or 5 steps and few more steps straight in.

We kept it open plan rather than getting a door and walls separating loft from stairs and floor beneath.

Make sure your new loft floor is on steel supports. The steel will be lodged into your gable walls. If a semi-d they will be bolted using chemical screws into your neighbours joining wall. The new floor will sit happily on this. Some builders try to leave the steel bit out

Get plenty of velux windows in to create plenty of light.

Overall we were delighted with the new space !!

Good luck with it 8-)
