Lot's of speculation and rumours over what is going on there.

It is a large fresh water lake (as large as Lake Ontario but twice as deep) in Antarctica which has been under 4km of ice for 20 million years. The water at the bottom is heated geothermally and is believed to be about 68f. The upper levels are protected fro the extreme Antarctic cold by the ice above it. A team of Russian scientists have been drilling through the ice since 1990 (with a break from 1998-2006 due to protests about environmental issues). Recently a very large metal disc was identified at the deepest end of the lake and NSA then classified the entire area around the lake as top secret. The scientists got to within 50m of drilling through to the water when all contact with them was lost late last week.

The interesting bit is that is likely to be life there albeit only organisms but they will have been totally isolated from the rest of earth for 20m years.

I've read several articles and there is no mention of metal discs, not even on Wikipedia. Source?

'If the team does reach the lake water, they will bring its water up through the hole and let it freeze there over the winter. The following year they will be able to start research on what they find, Priscu explained.'

It's called a masscon I think.
Those clever science folks says it means mass concentration of metal.

That was not where I read it first but I can't find the original link. I think it was the Mail online but the original report has gone or been updated.

Sounds pretty cool....until they get down there and its just water.

I hope not though.....

I hope they find some prehistoric dinsoaur man called Bert down there, or underwater elephants, or torpedo badgers that fire themselves into the elephants and eat them from the inside out.

The Daily Mail will just accuse them of being workshy and claiming benefits. It's best they stay hidden.

I thought the concern was more about the potential for a uber-virulent legionnaires style bug; the theory being it would be like the aliens from War of the Worlds dying of human flu because of lack of immunity. Whatever might have been pooled down there eons ago and then kept at a nice bacteria friendly temp might not be that great for us.

I wouldn't say no to a common or garden flying disc though. :P

I just hope this story does not have a dissapointing ending.

So this week or next they will break through?

Hopefully they will find some new creatures down there.
