Anyone ever tried making some?

It's going to be a toss up between either Jam or Crumble. What experiences have you had?

Not keen on jam but I love crumble.

I remember my mom making some in the summer when I was a nipper and it attracted swarms of wasps which trapped us in the house.

Hot crumble and cold ice cream or cold crumble and hot custard. :D

I think you can just freeze them.

Yes we make Jam every year:

Gooseberry and also Blackberry

Gooseberries are high in pectin so you just need preserving sugar - for blackberries you will need a jam with added pectin otherwise it will not set.In both cases a squeeze of lemon juice will aid the process.

approx 50/50 jam sugar - depending how sweet the fruit is.

Jars need to be sterile or the jam will go mouldy + they need to be hot or pouring the hot jam in will crack them.

A thick bottomed pan is essential as is a jam funnel otherwise things will get messy. A jam thermometer is not essential.

The key is getting it to setting point - too early you have a runny mixture (from experience still tasty - ideal with ice cream) or too thick (though 4 secs in the microwave will sort that out!).

Keeps for a good year or so.

Yum.

Another preserve fan here - although would make jelly as opposed to jam as it doesn't have all those nasty little seeds that get in your teeth....

Blackberry crop has been particularly good this year, we already have a freezer drawer full of them.
Yours a little late if you're still to pick them?

I am swaying towards the crumble. And may even add a few apples - I'm a devil like that....

Crumble is why God created fruit like apples and rhubarb.

Hey - why not do both.

There is no such thing as a bad crumble - fact.

Expensive tip - add macadamia nuts to the crumble mixture - heaven just got better.....
