It means Hughes and Hange will start?

SSN reporting Cuellar and Colins (AV) out of the opener.

Aston Villa have suffered a double defensive blow with right-back Carlos Cuellar and central defender James Collins ruled out of the opening Barclays Premier League clash with visiting West Ham.

Cuellar has failed to recover from a hamstring injury while Collins is still side-lined with a calf problem.

Cuellar and Collins were both regular members of the side last season.

But caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald is hoping striker Gabriel Agbonlahor (hamstring) and centre-back Curtis Davies (knee) will be available.

MacDonald said: "Carlos is still not outside running because of the hamstring injury he picked up.

"He's getting there but he won't be ready for Saturday.

"James will return to training later this week. He won't be available for the weekend though.

"We have injuries but you have to deal with them. Let's see what we can do with what we've got."

MacDonald added: "Curtis and Gabby are both joining in. How far down the line they are, I'll have to assess over the next couple of days.

"You always get little niggles - with the hard grind of pre-season - but I am confident whatever side we put out will compete with West Ham on Saturday."

Update from Arsenal official website............

Arsène Wenger has a number of selection issues to resolve before he can name his squad for the Premier League opener at Liverpool on Sunday.

Johan Djourou (hamstring), Nicklas Bendtner (groin) and Aaron Ramsey (leg) will all miss the trip to Anfield, while Alex Song (calf) is almost certain to do likewise.

However Denilson (abdominal) and Abou Diaby (calf) face fitness tests before the team travel north. Meanwhile, Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas are not injured but do lack match fitness after a long World Cup campaign. Wenger will wait before making a decision on either. Despite missing the trip to Poland last weekend with a muscular injury, Andrey Arshavin is available.

"Alex Song has a calf problem and will be short," Wenger told Arsenal TV Online on Thursday afternoon. "Denilson will have a test on Friday or Saturday on an abdominal problem. Diaby has a calf problem but he is back in full training. He might be available and Andrey Arshavin is alright.

"But I still have to make a decision about whether I will include Van Persie and Fabregas in the squad."

Arsenal.com will bring you updated injury news from the manager's press conference on Friday lunchtime.

Liverpool Echo's pre-match preview blandly states:

Injuries:

Liverpool: Fernando Torres - groin strain (expected return: Aug 19th),
Martin Skrtel - ankle/foot injury (expected return: unknown).

Not heard any updates on Torres and was expecting at least some bench warming. Skrtel is news to me as he playe an international on wednesday.

Another Arsenal update.............

Ahead of the curtain-raiser, Wenger's injury list was ill-defined. Nicklas Bendtner (groin), Johan Djourou (hamstring) and Aaron Ramsey (leg) are more than short-term absentees. Alex Song's calf problem is not serious but he may miss Sunday while Denilson (abdominal) only returned to training on Friday and faces a fitness test. Abou Diaby (calf) will also be checked late but should be OK. Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas are not injured but not match-fit. If they do travel, Wenger suggested they would be bit-part contributors at best.

However there is one area of clarity. Wenger told TV Online on Thursday that Laurent Koscielny would make his full Arsenal debut at centre half alongside Thomas Vermaelen. Though even the manager admitted it will be a tough baptism.

Not strictly injury news, but I hope I can crave your indulgence with this one...

Hughton must decide if or how to use Jonás Gutiérrez after the Argentine’s extended post-World Cup break. He appeared against the Republic of Ireland in midweek, but only for 15 minutes.

“Jonás is obviously a little bit behind everyone else but he’s not far off,” Hughton explained.

“He didn’t have a long break so his physical fitness isn’t too bad.”

Hughton said knocks to Peter Lovenkrands and Danny Guthrie were “minimal”.
Guthrie’s knee injury and Lovenkrands’ groin problem should both have cleared up in time for the visit of Villa.

Nasri out for a month at least.

So Fab better play or Arsenal will be really weak as Nasri was really the only driving force in midfield during the Liverpool game.

Modric left the game early the other night with some sort of groin strain. Harry reckons it's a wait and see situation. Sorry no link, I heard it on the radio.

Official City site says Jerome Boateng is out for 1-2 weeks; also Aleksandar Kolarov out for 3-4 weeks (my estimate)

That report also says Wayne Bridge has a broken bone in his foot so I'd guess that as 3-4 weeks also.

Daniel Taylor's Tweeted 4-6 weeks for Kolarov from the Mancini press conference.

Arsenal youngster Emmanuel Frimpong out for 6 to 9 months with a cruciate. Also confirmation that Samir Nasri is out for 3 to 4 weeks.

Blackburn's Vince Grella (calf) and David Dunn (groin) set to miss this weekend but should be back shortly thereafter.

Spurs' Jermain Defoe (groin), Robbie Keane (knee), Roman Pavyluchenko (ankle) and Luka Modric (groin) all miss this weekend, with no further prognosis given. Giovani dos Santos has a hamstring and I expect he's out as well.

P.S. Can I remind everyone this is a news thread only? No questions, chat or banter thanks. Start a thread in the main forum if you want to do that. :)

Looks like I may have jumped the gun a bit on some of the Spurs news. I'm going to quote the whole article from the official Spurs site to let you make your own mind up on some of these as some of the reporting contradicts what Harry says:
Quote:
Harry Redknapp reports that we could travel to Stoke with just one fit striker on Saturday. Jermain Defoe (groin), Roman Pavlyuchenko (ankle) and Robbie Keane (jarred knee) are all struggling. That leaves Peter Crouch available up front for what is always one of the toughest away trips in the Barclays Premier League at the Britannia Stadium. Giovani (hamstring) and Luka Modric (groin) are also doubtful after Tuesday night's Champions League play-off first leg encounter at Young Boys in Switzerland took its toll.

Boss Harry told his media briefing on Friday: "We've picked up so many injuries in that one game, it's unbelievable really. Jermain, Robbie, Pavlyuchenko - all out. Giovani as well. It leaves me with Peter Crouchy. It's not a bad one to have, but that's all we've got." David Bentley (ankle), Jamie O'Hara (back) and Jonathan Woodgate (groin) remain sidelined.

Quotes:

"Fabregas and Van Persie are back in the squad," confirmed Arsène Wenger at his pre-match press conference. "Robin was already last week, now they both are.

"Song is back in the squad too, Djourou is in the squad, but of course we lose Koscielny to suspension.

"Denilson is still working, he is back in normal training but he still needs to work on his fitness. He will need one more week."

Blackpool's goalie Paul Rachubka ruled out for six weeks with a knee problem. Also Jason Euell injured but no further details.

West Brom's Ishmael Miller (thigh) and Joe Mattock (ankle) both out for 3 to 4 weeks.

Sunderland's John Mensah has a hamstring that'll rule him out for about 3 weeks.

Wigan's Victor Moses out for up to three weeks with a groin issue.

Chelsea's Jose Bosingwa expected back within 3 weeks; also Ivanovic & Lampard are declared fit in the same article but Ramires won't be fit for tomorrow. Elsewhere Jeffrey Bruma has a hernia op and Gael Kakuta has an unspecified injury. I'll guess at 2 to 3 weeks out for each.

Aston Villa update:
Quote:
Gabby Agbonlahor [back, hamstring], Carlos Cuellar [hamstring] and James Collins [calf] are all out of Sunday's top-flight clash with Newcastle United. But manager Kevin MacDonald hopes to have the trio available for the Europa League play-off decider against Rapid Vienna next Thursday. And none of the three have recovered in time for the St James's Park match this weekend.

Steve Sidwell [achilles] misses out too while Andreas Weimann was stretchered off in the Europa League first leg clash at the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium with an ankle injury. MacDonald is waiting for the results of a scan before assessing the severity of the problem.

But in better news, the manager expects new signing Stephen Ireland to play a part this weekend. He said: "Stephen is obviously going to be involved - whether he starts I can't tell you that. "Regarding the others, Andy will not be available for a while now and the scan will tell us more. James , Carlos and Gabby are hoping to play in some kind of game early next week to hopefully be available for next Thursday but they won't be available for this week. The only other one is Steve, with an achilles tendon injury. Apart from that, it is just everybody back."

West Brom's Jerome Thomas came off at half-time yesterday with a twisted ankle - no prognosis yet
