I don't want a long debate. In fact I liked Avatar (although not as much as some) and like lots of other mainstream movies, including two I finally got around to watching this week, District 9 and Let the Right One in. Both terrific IMHO. In fact I like all kind of movies. Yes, I thought it likely that I would get the kind of response I did, which is one reason why I waited more than a day before finally deciding to post. Far from being a troll I HATE this kind of back and forth. I want to discuss the film not defend myself against charges I'm a snob or whatever. I also hesitated because I continued to think about the film. In the end I decided I had as much right to give my opinion as anyone else and wouldn't let myself be bullied into silence by those who have overreacted.
I will acknowledge this. There have been times in the past where I have stated my opinions too forcefully, and not showed enough respect for other posters. I have vowed to myself never to do that again and I didn't do it here. In fairness, that history may explain why some people are reading in an attitude that isn't there.
Whilst they got a lot of press. I don't think many people would describe either of them as mainstream movies.
Certainly not Let The Right One In - even the American remake probably won't be "mainstream" despite the exposure the original got.
Inception is cetainly intended to be a Summer blockbuster and should be taken as such.
It is miles above 99% of all othe blockbuster films in terms of quality of film making, story and acting.
It isn't just a blockbuster, though, it has pretentions to be so much more - it is a
film in the worst sense of the word. It's clearly intended to make serious points and make the viewer really think, whereas all it made me think was 'isn't it great we'll never be able to go into people's dreams and plant ideas, as it's clearly never going to end well'
