From your five available defenders you need to have one who you know isn't going to play in a particular gameweek. This could be due to injury/suspension, or by actually selecting a cheap (£3.9m) player that never plays for their club.

Select a 3-4-3 formation and place the defender who won't be playing into your starting line-up. Now organise your bench in the order of midfielder/defender/defender. Once the gameweek has ended your non-playing defender will be auto-subbed for your midfielder.

The benefit of this technique is to allow you to maximise the attacking potential of your team. If you use the method of selecting a £3.9m non-playing defender it allows you to upgrade your fifth midfielder who you know will always play. However, this is a more risky way of doing it as it leaves you with only two legitimate substitutes.

It will take the first defender.

From the rules :)

Q: I think my automatic substitutions are wrong?
A: Your team must have 1 goalkeeper, at least 3 defenders and at least 1 forward selected at all times.

If your starting team has 3 defenders, and one of them played 0 minutes, he can only be replaced by another defender who played.

Sorry, I didn't know about that. What would happen if both of your substitute defenders don't play but your midfielder does?

I'm picking only one defender who plays, then I can play 2-1-5-3

Did you also notice that it appears to have been edited in after several scathing responses.

I'm sure it was joke all along though ;)
