I know it vary depending on house size and how often you are in but what do you pay?

I pay £115 a month for both

Terraced 4 bed house with loft conversion

I'm sure I pay a fair bit more than that.

Sort of detached not a terrace so expect that puts my heating up. Also we do use a fair amount considering there are only 2 of us.

I am still on a variable pay-on-receipt-of-bill tariff for both gas and electricity from British Gas. The bill for both last month was £64.00ish. It can drop to as low as £45-£50 for both in the summer, and £140-£150 in the bleak mid-winter. I really don't like these fixed direct debit deals where you pay the same amount each month, regardless of usage, and for the sake of a saving of only around £180 a year I will probably stick with the variable tariff.

Average 3 bed garage link-attached. Just me and my wife, out all day, there all weekends.

I live with Mrs Pa in a 2 bedroom Semi Detached Bungalow built 8 years ago with full insulation. I pay £65 a month dual fuel to Scottish Power (gas & electricity) per direct debit. As of yesterday I'm £105 in credit. :D

Blimey - are you growing weed or something? I'm in a two-bedroom city centre flat, just changed provider (to e-on) and for gas and electric combined it is £51.75 a month by direct debit.

Only moved in last December…. started off paying £95 (same as previous house); current direct debit is at £25 per month for both

Cant wait for my next bill and to find I am in massive arrears
I have argued with them each time they have reduced it, but they dont seem to be able to (or willing) to over rule their system.

And therein lies my concern, because that same system refuses to budge if you believe you are overpaying by a larger amount than necessary, too. The last of years, my parents have a received a letter declaring their DD is rising - this year it was an extra £50 per month - and it is a helluva job to get it altered. It went up £20 p.m. in the end.

Really for the sake of saving less than £4.00 a week, are these fixed DD deals really worth the hassle?

DDs are fine. If you are overpaying then you can ask them to send you some cash and it is a nice surprise/bonus. If you are underpaying they'll soon let you know!

You also know what you are paying each month so can budget properly and don't have to suddenly up your payments (e.g. in winter) - or think about anything really!

I once got a huge bill and after months of arguing and fitting of a new meter I realised it was correct. They were quite generous in only putting my payments up slightly (albeit after some whinging and pleading poverty) so the debt came down over time.

Always worth periodically taking your own readings to check your payment plan is covering your use.

Gas and electric costs far more on the continent i think.

I may be able to work that out, but my parents wouldn't be able to. I can sort of the see the appeal of DD, but I don't like the fact they can up your DD by a fair chunk with very little effort on their part, but lots of effort on my part to find out why. In the summer, I had a bill for gas which was less than £15, and it only rises gradually to a peak in maybe December January, and then starts to fall again. Never in credit, never in debit. Simples.

Actually I thought I read recently it was the opposite. With many of our energy companies in the UK based in Europe, I thought they were more reluctant to up charges abroad, and use the UK as easy meat...?

Nope.
The UK gets the cheaper stuff but if their is ever a shortage in supplies the UK is the first to lose it.

Scousers don't actually have leccy meters', they have an, ahem 'alternative arrangement' with the power companies. :D

We pay about 125 euro a month. I've found its not the volume of the house that counts but how many are staying there. Our electricity bill also includes street lighting. Guess what. everybody is happy the street lighting goes off at 11:30.
When living in England over 5 years ago, it worked out at 7 quid per adult per week with 4 quid for each child. It was a good rule of thumb. I reckon with the price hikes since its probably more like 15 per adult and 10 per child.
Thankyou to all you EDF users in Old Blighty who are kindly subbing our bills
