Thanks for the advice so far - I have now written a comprehensive list of whiskies to try. I'll be venturing to my local Gall & Gall - it's a Dutch off-license that does have a reasonable range of alcohol - to see what I can find. With my mother coming to stay for the weekend, it might just be the perfect opportunity to start trying some new tastes

I have to admit, I've always frowned at Jamesons but not really sure why - think it was a mix of often seeing it as "House Whisky" so presumed it was cheap and nasty plus my father always frowned at it - but he then would drink Johnny Walker Black with Ginger Ale which always confused me.

But it does seem like I'll try and find myself a Jamesons or a Barlie Nicol Jarvine (if they sell that in the Netherlands) or potentially a Springbank or Highland Park.

As for adding water - maybe that will be my saviour. I've always felt whisky should only be drunk neat but it seems that I'm allowed a splash of tap water to help enhance the flavours.

If it still does not work I promise not to pro-create and to just put on frilly, flowery skirts throughout the summer!

Final question, what happens to whisky if you do refridgerate it? Does packing a whisky with ice really ruin the flavour? I heard that by adding 2 or 3 ice cubes and sipping slowly allowed you to taste different aspects of the whisky until it melted and then it was like adding tap water in the first place. I always imagine that the taps in the highlands only produce freezing cold water, so there is no such thing as room temperature (or are you meant to pour into a jug and let that warm up?)

Don't put whisky in the fridge. Ever.
If you want a bottle of Bailie Nicol Jarvie then your best bet is http://www.tonovermars.nl/
They seem to have more choice than Gall & Gall.
You can order online and this bottle is 18 euro.

I've tried it neat which is nice. :)

I've tried in with a little water both cold and room temp (tends to be the way that whisky buffs prefer) and it's nice but not as nice as neat. :?

I've tried it with loads of ice which is nice but gets too watery at the end.

I've tried with one or two lumps of ice which for me seems to be perfect. :D

The way my body rejects whiskey is very simple to describe - it's the worst heartburn I've ever experienced. I literally end up in the foetal position, rocking slightly, drinking pints of water until I can breathe again

Nice store.

An Cnoc 12yo is fairly unknown and very under-rated IMO.
Auchentoshan 12yo, another to check.

That's me started on the A's.

Got a bottle of the An Cnoc for my Birthday :-)

I've tried Auchentoshan 3 wood, which is very nice. Not tried the 12 though.

3wood is awesome. 12yo replaced the 10yo as the standard expression a couple of years ago - an improvement I'd say.

Has Stuboy been seen since he bought his whisky last night?
Maybe he's curled up in a ball somewhere.

I thought it worth a mention that tomorrow,Thursday 8.12.11, Aldi are selling 3000 bottles of a special purchase 40 year old Speyside single malt (Glenbridge )@ £50 each via their branches.
The experts among you will know that a good single malt is usually 15 or 20 years old.
l don't drink the stuff myself, but I know many of you do,and a few of you may be able to afford a bottle.

Will be there, will get one for curiosity.
Frankly f**k the experts, it's personal taste that matters. Get out try a few and see what floats yer boat.
I think Islay whiskies for example are best young about 6-8yo, some Spey/highland's need longer than the teens.
All down to PERSONAL taste.
Missed the 24yo released last month, probably wasn't missing out tbh, but I'll never know. :|

All I know is that I once tried a 30yo Highland Park when at a conference at Pennyhill Park, aka England Rugby's training base. It cost me £50 as I didn't dare put it on my company card. It wasn't my only drink that night but I woke up several hours later, having slept through the first hour of that day's conference schedule, with the tv on, still fully clothed, a head like a drill was going off in it and a mouth that was rougher than a badger's arse.

Good shit, in other words.

barely drink anymore either- but as others have said - Whisky Mac is a great drink - and confuses the hell out most bar staff in to the bargain! Tests their training

*Laphroaig. If you are a collector btw... try finding something called Leapfrog. It's a rare-ish bottling of Laphroaig by Murray McDavid, bottled under this name so as to disclose only a hint of the original distillery. A very nice treat indeed :)

Sorry, Ironfist, I'm not a Facebooker so can't help.

It's rather odd that Stuboy went off to buy some whisky then never reported back!
We know he's still alive - maybe it wiped his memory? I'm sure we've all experienced that at some point. Or have we? :?

This is my first gander at this thread - what struck me immediately was the ''chronic heartburn'' issue.
This is caused by stomach acid bubbling up into the oesophagus and burning it - not nice! Obviously, triggers like whisky are best avoided but .... if you must ....

Try drinking milk before you hit the whisky to line the stomach. Rennie or Gaviscon are alternatives, but the minty flavour will impact on the taste of the whisky unfavourably. These will help neutralise the stomach acid. Carry some anyway in case you get a bad attack - then move on to the Creme de Menthe.

Try to sit upright or stand - gravity is not your friend where reflux is concerned!

Sure, dilute your dram - but too much water ruins the flavours. Better is to dilute a little AND have a glass/pint of water along side the good stuff - Sip, savour, take a gulp of aqua. That way you get the full pleasure of the malt in the mouth and then dilute the alcohol in the stomach. You also cleanse the palate between sips, keeping the flavours fresh. If you're tasting several different drams then this is sensible anyway.

Finally, here's another shout for Tesco's own label malts, the Islay and Highland being my favourites.
Good luck, Stuboy!
