"Children's author Eoin Colfer has been chosen to write the sixth of the series by Adams' widow Jane Belson."

Is this a good thing????

I'll obviously have to buy it and read it as soon as it comes out but will it leave a sour taste in my mouth or will it add to the Hitchhikers' legacy and should that just be left alone :?

Have to be heartened by the following quote though: "I am bloody determined that this will be the best thing I have ever written. And if it isn't then I will make sure that the cover is extremely pretty."

That's a phrase almost befitting of Douglas Adams.

Mostly Harmless was a little bleak I suppose, but it also seemed that the ideas weren't flowing quite as they had in the earlier novels. Then there was Salmon of Doubt, which was slightly disappointing if unsurprisingly so. It's also no surprise that there is a yearning for more Hitchhiker's... but I'm not sure anyone can accurately replicate Adams' vision and find something new to say.

No more, please.
No one can replicate the Douglas Adams style of the characters speach. In my opinion, even Adams should of left the trilogy as it was. The 4th and 5th books seemed to rehash a lot of the 1st 3 books content. A sixth book in the ever increasingly inaccurately named trilogy will probably do the same. But, resistance! is futile! where money can be made easily.

I disagree about books 4 & 5. So Long And Thanks For All The Fish (the 4th book) is probably my 2nd favourite of the series, behind the first one obviously. Fenchurch was a great character and i was gutted when she dissapeared in Mostly Harmless. I also quite liked Arthur as The Sandwich Maker. I do love all 5 books.

I am very sceptical about another Hitchhiker book, which is not written by Douglas Adams. And I thought the ending of Mostly Harmless was pretty conclusive! But i will prob still buy it & read it. And even if it is only half as funny as the rest of the series, then it'll still be twice as funny as anything else!!

Maybe it could be some sort of prequal, or a collection of sidestories (similar to "Young Zaphod Plays it Safe") - so they could do "What really happened to Fenchurch?" or "The lives and deaths of Agrajag" or "Marvin's Guide to Paranoia"

[edit].....after reading that article in full, I'm a little bit more optimistic that Eoin Colfer might actually be able to make the Sixth Book work. I think the quote from Douglas himself impressed me most.

Quote:
Adams himself said: "I suspect at some point in the future I will write a sixth Hitchhiker book…I would love to finish Hitchhiker on a slightly more upbeat note.

"Five seems to be a wrong kind of number, six is a better kind of number."

So maybe some kind of alternate/parallell universe with a happy but funny ending could just be worth a read.

As some have said, i'll have to buy and read it straight away.
Unsure about another given the ending of mostly harmless, but hey, who knows
Hae to say i thought the same when reading DUNE and Asimovs foundation series, but both were complemented well by other authors

Adams said that the reason Mostly Harmless was so negative was that he was miserable. From wikipedia...

Quote:
In an interview reprinted in The Salmon of Doubt, Adams expressed dissatisfaction with the "rather bleak" tone of this book, and said that he "would love to end Hitchhiker on a slightly more upbeat note" by writing a sixth installment in the series. He blamed personal problems, saying "for all sorts of personal reasons I don't want to go into, I just had a thoroughly miserable year, and I was trying to write a book against that background. And, guess what, it was a rather bleak book!"

When Adams died (due to a heart attack) on May 11, 2001, it seemed that Mostly Harmless would become the final book of what Adams called a "trilogy". However, The Salmon of Doubt was published posthumously, containing, alongside numerous articles written by Adams, several chapters belonging to a new storyline for a third "Dirk Gently" novel. In interviews that can be found in the Salmon of Doubt, Adams admitted that while he was planning on writing a third Dirk Gently book, the ideas he was having for it would have fitted better into another Hitchhikers book.

Although the complete destruction of every version of the Earth in every possible timeline, along with the death of nearly all the regular characters, would seem to make a continuation extremely unlikely, Adams had remarked that the afterlife-enhanced state of the regulars merely meant he would not have to waste time at the beginning of the next book gathering them together or explaining what they'd been up to in the intervening period.

I just thought... this might at least be a good excuse to read the first 5 books again 8-) (i've already read them all 3 or 4 times)

maybe just before the new book comes out so that i could read all 6 consecutively.

It is now 42 days until Part 6 is officially released, so today I will begin re-reading parts 1 to 5.

My expectataions for Part 6 are relatively mixed. But I am going to pre-order the book, in order to get it as soon as possible. Nobody on earth can write like Douglas and it is liklely not going to be as good, nor as funny, as the first 5 parts. But I have heard some promising things from the interviews and snipets by (or about) Eoin Colfer. I'm looking forward to reading about our favourite characters again and if it makes me laugh a few times then I will be happy.

No iPlayer internationally unfortunately. :(

Hadn't realised this was happening till today though - will be interested to hear what people think. It will be very hard, nigh impossible, to replicate Adams' humour, but fingers-crossed. Have to say that I agree with Mark that the first 3 were substantially better than the latter two, but it is all a matter of taste.

Did anyone read the sixth part in the end? I have ordered it from my local library. If i'm going to be disappointed, then I only want to waste a quid, rather than the price of paperback.

I actually started to read it last night. Not fair to give it a review yet as I haven't consumed enough pages.

However... so far it is going quite well. If anything Colfer is trying slightly too hard to do an impression of Douglas Adams but is largely pulling it off.

(Having read the intro etc made me realise just how much of the storyline of the latter books books in the trilogy I'd forgotten)

Not bad i have to admit. As murf said, occassionally he tries too hard, but well worth a read if you're a fan

Finally read it. Not bad, I found the guide notes rather irritating. Better than 4 & 5, but not much to beat.

The ending does seem to be setting up another book.

I didn't realise that it would be a hardback, glad I only paid a £1.

I've read all the books many times, and re-read them all in preparation for this new instalment.

I've still not managed to get down to the shops to buy it yet because it's bloody raining. Again.

It's always raining on the Isle of Man, and I don't mean often raining. It's always raining.

Every bloody day for the ten years I've been here.

Then again, the UK was not much better when I was over there.

Can't argue with either of those. Was generally a bit slow, all setting up for one 'scene' rather than zipping all over the galaxy as in the early books. A bit too much on certain new characters and too many repeated nods to minor references from early books. Don't want to sound too negative as it was all good fun, didn't insult the legacy and obviously nice to see our heroes back (except we missed one).

7/10
