You're 36 and your licence ran out 3 years ago at the age of 33?

I don't understand that at all, once passed your car licence is good until you're 70.

Yup, you have to keep your photo in date or licence is invalid
Can't help with how to do it though
I thought you just sent off the relevant form and licence and got a new one back

I still have my original licence issued in 1982 and have never changed it but haven't lived in UK since 1994.
If I move back can I just change it for a new one?

Why do you have to change anything? :?

I'm with Vid on this - who has asked you to change it? have you got done for something?

You have to send it off every 10 years in order to have an updated photograph.

If you still have the old paper licence, you can keep it for the 70 years (unless you move address, change name etc)

Obviously you are resident where you are, do you have a licence issued there?

When I moved to Finland it was obligatory to surrender my UK licence to be issued with a Finnish one within a year of residency - my GB old style HGV Class II was made up to a full Euro C+E in the process. On returning to the UK I surrendered my Finnish licence for a UK version and had my HGV part returned to the previous entitlement. The only change on the licence was the need to wear correction for my vision for HGV driving that was added whilst in Finland.

As a HGV driver my licence needs renewing every 5 years so the 10 year thing doesn't come into the equation for me.

I have never needed to drive here so I never bothered getting a Dutch licence.

I'd suggest giving the DVLA a call to get clear advice on how to proceed.

Yes I had one 3 years ago. :D though havn't driven since.... Though may need to drive as off to Canada on Honeymoon and then if the wife has some little Crookface's.

I will phone them 2morrow and let you know what they say, though it seem all new passports have a digital chip, so you can renew online if you have one of these new passports issued after 2007.

I think you may find only the old paper licence are valid till 70 yrs (unless damaged or address change). The plastic ones have a shelf life (not sure how long). Only know because I had to change mine (out of date) for a Belgium licence last year.

I've lost mine.

Will the 10 years be from when I last moved and changed my address (less than 10 years) or when I first got the photo one?

Will it be cheaper for me to say I'm after a renewal than a repalcement for losing it???

Good Question Murf, though it seems we have more questions than Answers. :D

I will see what I can get out of them 2morrow.

So it would appear that, if you have a paper licence, then you need do nothing if it is not lost, damaged or needs change of address.

Read your photocard licence. It will have an expiry date on it
If that date has passed, then you technically don't have a licence (driving not in accordance)
You need to update that photo people

Correct

And some general advice for all:
You need a licence that is showing your correct address and details.
You really should make sure that you have your licence and it's right. You never know when you might have to produce it to police for an offence (i don't know many drivers who stick to every law 100% of the time ;))
I had a woman who was recently married with one name on her licence, a different one on the insurance and 3 addresses (london, birmingham and scotland) She had an absolute nightmare linking everything together to produce her docs
Have also had to send people to court for not producing their licence because they lost it and couldn't be bothered to get a new one. DVLA are far too slow to get you one in a week.

Ok, I spoke to the ncie welsh peroson at the DVLA.

For me I just filled the form in and send My Old Card and a cheque for £20. I cant be bothered to look for the paper bit so he said tick that i have lost it. The fact that the Licence ran out 3 years ago does not matter though not sure if I will get it for 7 years or from the date!

As for Mr's Crook, I did this online and they said that was ok and is free of charge, and they will send the new Licence and use Her Picture from her 2006 Licence!! We can charge the Name at a later date.

I've changed address three times in the last year and always send the tear-off slip to the DVLC. Has come back every time, no problem.

You need the old stylee licence just in case you get convicted of any motoring offences and have to send it off with your cash.

I managed to order a replacement one online - not sure how they expected me to know my 'driver number' though! - luckily I had a photocopy of my lost licence. I think it indicates the photo is due to expire in 2014 so it will be yet more money for them soon when my photo expires. One tenth of the driving population every year at £20 a pop is how much...... (guess 30 million drivers = £60 million per annum!)

They also asked for my passport number and I think they might get the photo from that rather than my old photo licence :?
