I'm very much liking the extra 3m I've got in the bank when I ditched Lampard for Essien. It's spooky - there's been hardly a peep about Essien on the boards but he's only 4% behind Lampard in the 'teams chosen by' stakes (11% to 15%)

His 4.4 PPG for 8m rates better than Lampards 5.5 PPG for 11m, and perhaps the key to his selection lies with Ben Haim and Alex - the defensive cover that these afford should mean Essien will play in MID rather than DEF as he did at periods for last season.

Given that he's an 8.0m ever-present, in a top 3 team, I'm just suprised I haven't seen him in many teams.

I guess it's the uncertainty of his PAD status that is cause for caution. 46/144 points in boni is a lot to rely on! Of course, he should be scoring more assists and goals if he's playing further upfield.

I've been swapping back and forth between Essien and Lamps all pre-season. At one point I was convinced Essien would be a major attacking force from the start and I'd watch him soar in value tucked into my midfield.

Now with Terry out I would wager Essien will return to his defensive-midfielder role until the defense gets set again.

Essien is surprisingly still unervalued, and I still have my doubts, not about him but about how his excellence as a player is not really reflected in fantasy points scoring. I agree the defensive security has improved at Chelsea so the holding Essien may wander into the box a lot more {did you see how many in-front-of-goal chances he missed last seasn}. At 8m I would still hold my horses, especially with Malouda and Wright-Phillips likely to take a share of the points this season...

He was playing the Makalele role in the Com Shield even though Mikel was available. If he ends up there for most of the season I don't think he'll get the Boni that he did last year.

I'm been racking my brains but I still can't figure it out! What does PAD stand for?!

Between the CRDs, MGPs, TBHs and now PADs, I just can't keep up!

Makalele is injured.
