I was walking my wee dog Sandy down by the river today and when I bent down to pick up a stick for him to chase I spotted this in the shale. It looks like a very old coin, but I can't decipher the writing around the rim. Is there someone I should take it to and have it examined ? We have a local Museum and I wonder if that's the best place to go.

I cleaned it up as best as I could.

Looks interesting Pa - I would imagine it is from the early 19 th century

as I sure you know - dont clean it too vigorously - it will prove to be either an early coin or a coke botle lid - I will be interested in hearing what the museum say

It's an old English Shillfing, a rare coin indeed its value would've been the equivalent of nineteen guineas.

Just joking - no idea really, although on first look I thought it looked like a top down view of the burnt crust of a steak and kidney pie

Does it say Coca Cola or Buckfast on the other side? It's far from mint condition at any rate.

A wire brush and some WD40 did the trick. 8-)

Being a Scotsman paw, are you sure isn't just a coin that had been in your pocket for a long time?

I think they are one and the same, but Pontefract cake is what I have always known them as, I think I must have picked up the Pomfret thing when I consulted Google about the spelling of Liquerish. :)

Sry Pa, it looks like a bottle cap. The edge has been folder over around the rim, unlike any coin ive ever seen. Do you have dimensions, put a ruler on image. :?:
