I half agree with above. It certainly wasnt "lucky" if someone captained Sess, at least no more or less so than if someone captained RVP and he score a couple today. A goal and assist was well within an expected range for Sess v Swansea at home. I would say if someone captained Dempsey that would be considered lucky as 3 goals v Newcastle is a bit of a statistical outlier. Similarly if RVP scored 5 today against Man Utd, that would also be lucky. Week before last for example I had BAE and was very lucky as his goal, assist, and clean sheet was a outlier that week.

That said, I do not agree that the odds favoured lesser candidates this week as I see it as pretty evens between the likes of Agero/RVP/Rooney, and Sess/Walters/Dempsey. Any of these choices were legit this week - we are now only saying the 2nd group were better in hindsight. Then again, I am amazed some people pick guys like Torres/Sturridge each week as these are awful picks based on almost every stat and had Torres scored 3 I would very much argue that it was lucky.

Personally, I changed from Sess to RVP (had Dempsey as well) but one of the reasons I did so was because I knew my rival would captain RVP and not having Sess and Dempsey I knew I had a better team than him. I also viewed chances as pretty near equal regarding point return. So captaining RVP wasnt simply based on "best guy this week" but rather a hedge against him doing something spectacular and letting my rival catch up. If I could change now of course I would take Sess but still happy with the reasoning behind it, whether RVP does terribly or brilliantly today.

sessengnon is a world class player who has now settled. didnt see it as a big or brave decision captaining him at all.

World Class? No.

well hes comfortably better than others who get banded about in that category like nasri, mata and young.

keep not captaining him because you think hes not "captain material" x

Dont have him to captain. Still think he's not captain material. His goal today was only his second at home all season. People who captained him today took a gamble and got lucky.

This "not captain material" way of thinking is such a specious argument. Your captain should be the player you think is most likely to score more than any other player in your team for one week only.

Nothing else. That's it.

Sessegnon could be the best player in someone's team, or more likely he could be playing at home against the bottom club when all the other players are away to more difficult opposition. Captaining him doesn't mean you're saying he's a better player than the others, just that he stands a better chance of scoring the most points that week.

Looking to give the captaincy to someone who is "captain material" in your eyes would be an appropriate approach only if you had to choose one player to be your captain for the entire season, where you can ride out the poorer weeks by ensuring you capture every big haul, in those circumstances then RVP, Rooney etc are all great candidates, knock yourself out. But when the top 4 clubs from which captains are most often chosen all play each other in one week then looking elsewhere is perfectly reasonable.

Now, the usual suspects might go out tomorrow and all score hatricks and you'll doubtless say it proves this line of thinking completely wrong, but the fact is the odds favour some of the lesser used candidates this week, for Walters backers it didn't work out, for Sessegnon backers it did. Lucky? I don't think so, it was well reasoned and well rewarded. He was most definitely "captain material" if being captain material means the player most likely to score the most points this week.

My god, talk about stating the obvious! Obviously i get that. I was just saying that In my view, captaing sessegnon over van persie is a gamble regardless of who sunderland and arsenal are playing. Van persie is by far the best striker in the league and can and will score against anyone.

Sessegnon may well score higher than vp this week now but before the games started, the fact is it was a gamble to pick him over vp. He had scored 1 goal at home all season and a double figure score from him would have been in hope rather than expectation.

You've just totally contradicted yourself there. You say it's obvious and you get it, but then you say it was a gamble regardless of fixtures, and RVP is by far the best striker in the league, so you obviously don't get it at all. Please re-read the post, nothing to do with who is the best player in the league, just who's the best prospect on a given week.

I have Rooney, Van Persie, Aguerro, Bale, Silva, Dempsey, Sess and Ben Arfa

Had the armband on Dempsey all week -only other one I considered was Sess.

Dempsey was awesome last week against Blackburn - I would say he was unlucky not to get two goals and 2 assists in that game - combination of great saves and bed refs stopped him .... he traditional scores his point after christmas ...I got him in this time last season and he was a regular captain choice fr the run ii. Especially when Dembelle was confirmed as missing he was an obvious captaincy choice as he was then going to be playing up front just off zamorra.

Sess is superb at the moment - I am genuinely surprised by the lack of owners for sess and dempsey....was shocked by how few picked them in the captaincy thread, and I am now laughing out load at the "ses is't captain material nonsense' ... he is under a new manager, in the form team in the league...and he has moved from the wing to the centre up top .... why would his record this year have any influence on how you view his points potential now .... he is clearly a must have with the fixtures they have - and a great captain choice. He really does look a hell of a player to me at the moment.

I think a lot of people don't feel comfortable selecting a captain from a club outside of the top 5.
