We all know the general drift now :D so the letter G this week for the greatest heavy metal/rock bands.

My choices for this topic are Guns N Roses.

At a time when pop was dominated by dance music and pop metal, Guns N' Roses brought raw, ugly rock & roll crashing back into the charts. They were not nice boys; nice boys don't play rock & roll. They were ugly, misogynist, violent; they were also funny, vulnerable, and occasionally sensitive, as their breakthrough hit "Sweet Child O' Mine" showed. While Slash and Izzy Stradlin ferociously spit out dueling guitar riffs worthy of Aerosmith or the Stones, Axl Rose screeched out his tales of sex, drugs, and apathy in the big city; bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler were a limber rhythm section that kept the music loose and powerful. Guns N' Roses' music was basic and gritty, with a solid hard, bluesy base; they were dark, sleazy, dirty, and honest -- everything that good hard rock and heavy metal should be.

Enjoy some classic Gun's people

Genesis before Phil Collins got a grip, Gentle Giant, Greenslade.

But best of all must be Gong.

Garbage are classic Murf, another Nirvana connection with Butch Vig producing and being in the band.

By no means a one album band or one hit wonder, a quality band were it not for Guns N Roses thet would get my vote

The Grateful Dead...more than just a legendary band - a complete way of life in their day.

Still a huge fan of Genesis' music made before the departures of Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett...but what followed was increasingly awful.

When I was a young teenager in the early Seventies I'd have said the Groundhogs. A couple of years later I'd have said Genesis, before Peter Gabriel left, Phil Collins took over and they became rubbish. Then in the late Seventies it would have been Gong. In the Eighties Guns n Roses were brilliant at what they did, but it had mostly been done before 10-15 years earlier. More recently, Goldfrapp has the field to herself.

Yep, would agree with lots of mentioned here - Gentle Giant, Greenslade, Gong, Guns n Roses, Goldfrapp. Also Graham Parker and the Rumour, Glasvegas, Goldie Lookin' Chain (though not exactly rock :)), Green Day...

..but for me this has to be the easiest one of all, as one band stands head and shoulders above all the rest - Genesis.

...and I'm sure I don't even need to say this, but that's Genesis before Gabriel left and they became crap.

They were very good and even the first two post Gabriel albums were pretty good as well.

Yes, fair comment - in fact Trick of the Tail was so good that you hardly knew he'd gone, it was really after that one that the steep decline began

Agreed, the departure of (unique-sounding) guitarist Steve Hackett - after Wind and Wuthering - was just as significant as Gabriel's exit. The next album, Now We Are Three was poor and they went downhill further after that. :(

Mrs Spiny who had been a life long Genesis fan actually cried with disapointment when she heard And Then There Were Three. :(

...oops, wrong title - but it's been confined to the back of my mind for decades! From my perspective, the writing was on the wall from the time of Phil Collins' first solo album (always thought that In the Air Tonight sounded like an unfinished backing track). Still, at least I got to see the classic lineup twice (Drury Lane 74 and Wembley 75) and a few gigs on the TOTT and WaW tours.
