I'm 30, been working for about 9 years in a variety of public sector jobs including audit (gave up when I failed the accountancy exams), Business management (dull) and now research. Mostly in London.

I want to re-locate to the west country and work part time, to basically ease the stress in my life which is gonna put me in a early grave.

Degree in economics (and lapsed French)

I reckon I need to earn about £20-£25k to keep the wolf from the door and want to work 4 days a week max, or flexibly from home ideally.

I'm good at: numbers, organising, research, attention to detail
I'm bad at (bored of): TFF, office politics (wanna get out), commuting, physical work (even though I'd like to do it), technical skills

so whats my career?!!

I started this thread last year and still want to go in this direction; http://www.fiso.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... 46&start=0

Maybe there's an angle for you somewhere in there :?

I think you need a reality check

How much do you earn now?

It appears as though what you want may be a tad unrealistic?

If you are good at what you do - could you do consultancy work or maybe work or a charity/vol sector orgnsation doing project/research/finance stuff, you may also be an ideal candidate for a job share with an appropriate local authority - maybe police authority if you are any good with stats/performance management etc.

As as starting point I would try to get some quick wins out of your current situation - I was getting fed up with a few things at work and by just changing a few simple things and it has helped, I now work from home at least one day a month, I take every first wednesday afernoon of the month off using a bit of fexi-time (this way i don't feel as pissed off when working a bit late) - and I always go for a brisk walk at lunch time.

I also put the shits up my boss by applying for another job - I had them convinced I was leaving and all of a sudden my workload decreased and I am appreciated more

Not completely unrealistic.

I'm in my early 30s, and I have a part time job which i do at home in the evenings (after my normal very well paid job). 2 hours a day on average and I earn up to an extra 15k per year.

This is doing e-learning development and flash animations. I took 3 courses which cost about 3k, and spent a couple of months getting my skills up to scratch, and getting contracts - and now I only have to decide when I can take it full time. Which will probably be when I have added web design to my portfolio.

If you are wanting to get out of the office environment then you are best working for yourself... and unless you are exceptional at what you do then some training and a change in direction is probably the best way forward.

If you have a dream and a skill in demand then anything is possible. Good luck to you!

well 4 days out of 7 instead of 5 is what I want to work, and for about £20k don't think thats silly money. I think the average salary in the UK is about £23k?

NHS! been there done that. Horrible. Never again. Having to lie to the government about hitting targets was not a career high point.

Scrumpy tester should tick all the boxes........ Your wish to avoid an early grave might be a problem though.

You seem unmotivated at best, and lazy at worst. You can decide for yourself which you are, but neither is attractive to prospective employers; especially in the private sector and especially in this economic climate. A career does not just happen, you need to be committed and hard working.

Phone some old friends from university and ask them what they are doing, and how they have got to where they are. People love talking about themselves. Perhaps this will give you some insight into where you want to end up, and more importantly, how you will get there.

Good luck.
