Assuming this transfer goes ahead, will AVB try to recreate the English national teams centre half partnership?

If he does favor Cahill over Luiz, 5.1M could be a bit of a bargain imo.

Cahill more likely to go to Arsenal.
You have heard it here first.

Yeah Arsenal have sniffed around him before. I was, though, watching Chelsea the other day and thinking they could really do with Cahill. If he goes to either I'll likely snap him up.

Chelsea are after Hulk this transfer window (that is the major target).
And possible Romain will sign Kaka as well.

Can't see any defenders being signed to be honest until next summer when the Terry situation is fully resolved.
Terry will see it as a lack of faith in him for Chelsea to sign 2 central defenders while he has this court case over his head.

I doubt Arsenal will sign anymore central defenders. With Koscielny, Vermaelen, Mertesacker, Djourou and Squillaci this is the strongest back line theyve had for a while (in terms of depth).

Just a pity that apart from the Verminator the rest are pants then.

I agree, I doubt Cahill will move to Arsenal. Wenger didn't want to spend (much) money on a central defender this summer so why all of a sudden with these present centre backs in the team already.

They will and AVB has said so. Alex must be replaced.

Cahill has been terrible for Bolton, and England, this season. I just hope that he doesn't end up at Spurs because I think that the club already has 4-5 centre backs who are better players (Bassong being the only possible exception).

Go get him, Chelsea!

Hard to think of a top level centre back, these days, who hasn't had a lot of injuries - although John Terry & Carragher have probably suffered fewer than most.

BOT - I just don't see why Villa reject Cahill is so highly rated. IMHO, Phil Jagielka is probably the best centre back in the Premiership outside the Top 6 clubs.

Jags is very good, Dann at Blackburn and Johnson at Wolves are just as good as Cahill yet they got transfers from Brum to clubs fighting relegation last summer

Not quite sure how that makes his performances any less spectacular

Of course, if you were referring to a move for him to one of the big clubs, then yes i'd probably agree.

Dunne is a (own) goal machine.

Enough said.

Oh and he is Irish.

Top Irish centre halfs don't exist

Good call on Colocinni - Ryan Nelsen (when fit) is another who wouldn't look out of place at a Top 6 club.

Richard Dunne is having a great season at Villa - but the days when Ireland had world class centre backs (O'Leary, Lawrenson, McGrath) have passed.

Entertaining though this thread may be, I'm not sure the nail is always being hit on the head...

If Arsenal had signed a CB who looked likely to be 1st XI material last summer, FPL would probably have priced him around 6.0M (looking at this season's starting prices). Similarly, if Chelsea had done the same, FPL would probably have priced him at least 6.5M. It seems reasonable that those are the sorts of figures that would attach to Mr Cahill (currently 5.2M) in the event that he undertook either of the mooted transfers without already having a current FPL price set (e.g., if he were currently playing in Scotland). The chances are then that Mr Cahill's FPL transfer value would rise towards his notional starting price, as active FPL managers bought him as a CRD - creating a bandwagon effect*. In this situation, the purchase would be a one-way bet - either he's a success and you have a relatively cheap defender in a decent team; or he's not, in which case you can bale on him after a few GWs with a bit of free money in your pocket. Personally I don't really think Mr Cahill at Arsenal or Chelsea would enhance my FPL team much, but I don't see how I could afford not to buy him in the circumstances I've outlined.

*especially if the transfer is in time for the New Year w/c to have an effect (w/c transfers do count towards price changes, don't they?).

I think if Cahill moves to Chelsea he'll partner Terry at CB.

Cole - Cahill - Terry - Ivan

Chelsea keep conceding when Bos plays so think he ideally wants Ivanovic at RB. Luiz can go crazy in some games and lose consistency so can see him being backup to Cahill.

Absolutely hate G. Cahill on my team this season but I will hold on just to see if a January move to a good club is made.

I'm surprised you've even got him, most people would just put him in once he goes.

Looks like he is very much Chelsea bound:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/16290837.stm

Will be looking to get him in with Chelsea having a decent fixture list. Just need to know he will definitely start and when he will be available for?

If he's signed up by Sunday like Coyle suggests, do people think he'll go straight into the side for a nice comfy home fixture vs Sunderland?

I'm debating whether or not to go with him over Raylor.
