Just one of those moments really. I was searching around the world wide (web) AK Fiso, and saw many threads upon Zakis injury.. and the fact he was playing Pool (every play I have playing Pool now - I'll play ) so thought it'd be wise to put him on the bench, but wait for it.

Had a choice of Delap or Marney to go in place of Zaki, I went for Delap.
This week I'm getting (aiming for) 84pts to up my weekly average to 60pts.

Yeah we were doing pretty well at that point. I had my crew nice and focused.

Then this happened............





..............We ended up having to send out crewman Ashbee in a kayak to lure the shark away, costing us at least 3 good tacks



Unfortunately Ashbee didn't survive and we had to bury him at sea.

Rest in Peace Friend.

Thanks to re-reading most of this thread, I have only just sussed out how to follow my route properly on Google Earth! That, of course, made me realise that as I was considering taking a holiday in Cape Verde, I wanted to sail past them a few times to take a closer look. I haven't decided yet if I need a further look this weekend

Edit: Flyman seems to have managed a pretty perfectly straight course. How does he manage that then, Romyn?

Good navigation

Using a few of your tacks this week I'll try and explain the inner workings a bit more. (All the info for each tack is available by either clicking the relevant placemark, or waypoint, on the globe view or in the folder view on the left)

For all your tacks this week you were targeting waypoint 4 - which has:-

Max Navigation Error of 90°
This means the maximum your bearing can be off-perfect is 90°.
First a bearing is taken to your target waypoint.
Then the difference between a player's points and the points of the player in the same posution the previous week is taken. (This difference is Absolute - ie 7-2 is the same as 2-7 ... = 5)
This difference is then x7 .... and the result number, in this example 35, is the % of the Max that your bearing for that tack will be off by. So 35% of 90° = 31.5°. (Whether this is + or - is down to whether the player in question is playing at Home or Away.)
If your Bearing to your next waypoint was 180° and the player whose tack it was resulted in the above numbers your Actual bearing for that tack would be either 148.8° or 221.5°.

Next is the distance you travel on that bearing - the Distance per Point for your target waypoint. For waypoint 4 this is 40Nm and so if the player being processed scored 7, say, your boat will travel 280Nm along the bearing calculated above.

So on to a few of your tacks...

Tack 2 and Tack 3 were dead on course towards waypoint 4 as in both cases the players score was the same as that for the player in the same position the previous week - and therefore there was no navigation error.

and the Distance per Point is 40Nm (which means for every point each player scores will move you 40Nm) - in this case 240Nm each time as both players, 2 & 3, scored 6 points.

tack 4 and you were 6.3° off the ideal course (7% of 90°) - to starboard as Clichy was playing at home. This changed your course from 199° 23' 20" (ideal) to 205° 41' 20" (actual).

...and so on and so on.

Tack 8 was fairly crucial as if Geovanni had been playing Away you would have crossed the wayline - but as he was at Home he took a starboard tack and with a 50.4° error (56% of 90°) your actual bearing took you away from your target.

Tack 9 got you closer again but then tack 10 and the same happened ... moving away from the waypoint. T 11 back in, T12 no movement and T13 away again...

You were extremely unlucky in that 3 times you nearly got there but on each occasion the next scoring tack took you away from your target.

If you follow the same logic with Flyman's course you can see he didn't have any of those misfortunes and with fairly high distances managed to build a nice lead.

Hope that explains things a bit more and didn't bore the pants off anyone

You need to refresh the link - right-click the main link in your My Places and Refresh - that will grab the latest set. If for some reason that doesn't work just delete the link completely and re-download it.

You have the latest but you are just looking at the start - you need to move the time slider across to right - by default it goes to the beginning of the leg.

The coverage takes a few hours as it is and with 60 boats and 900 tacks per week it's difficult to give everybody a name-check. All boats appear in the screenshots and weekly standings links at the top of each pool's commentary though so, if you don't use GE for some reason, you will always be able to see how you're doing from those.

Because of the number of tacks I just pick on all incidents, run-agrounds, near RAs and men overboard (with those who change course to repond), lead changes, any other tack sequences that cause me some amusement (like Jonathan's this week) and anything else that stands out - and even then I'm sure I'll miss something myself.

Get yourself to the front or hit the rocks and I'll be sure to mention you next time

Does that mean that I should be trying to position my players according to last week's scores and my forecast of their scores this week. ie a defender with an easy looking home game should be in the same position as a defender that scored well last week?

I'll be switching between 4-3-3 and 3-4-3 and Captain Ronaldo is usually in that 1st midfield spot (ie 6th or 5th tack). Comparing his points to a weak defender could send me massively off course!

That would work - but it's tricky to do - and sometimes, to avoid land say, you'd want to go off course and you can only be sure of exactly where you are at the beginning of the week and therefore your first player.

I'd just trust to luck myself

Tack 9: Diminutive Midgets runs aground on the Brazilian coast - 2 tacks for repairs

Tack 10: Crewman Cole falls over the side of Equipe Chat's Noir. Donkeys Ride Again turns around to help and makes it in time to save Equipe Chat's Noir an extra tack. Ajax Hamster Jam also responds but doesn't have to change course to do so.

Tack 14: Crewman Cole falls over the side of The Bare Bones. Both Sultan of Barnet FC and Its Just Not Cricket turn round to assist but neither get very far and The Bare Bones spends 2 tacks recovering.

Tack 15: Cole again goes swimming this time from Self Cleaning Ovens. Again it's down to Sultan of Barnet FC and Its Just Not Cricket, being the closest 2 boats who will try and help and will do so on the 1st tack of next week.

Getafe King Life leads on reaching waypoint 6 followed closely by Chester Draws, Isaiah Forty:31 and atx1303. Smoke City brings up the rear

Tack 8: Crazy Canucks loses a man overboard. The Drogs and A Smoked Cheese Pig respond with A Smoked Cheese Pig making it in time to save Crazy Canucks the extra tack.

Tack 10: SuperSlaves runs aground on the Brazilian coast - crew Robinho being homesick again as he caused the same to happen in Pool A.

Tack 13: Kelly's Heroes loses a man over and again it's A Smoked Cheese Pig, along with Eenog Koning, who answer the SOS but neither make it in time.

Tack 14: Time for Trumpton is another having Cole go swimming. At it again and Atlético Tcf respond with At it again making the ground up in time.

Nutstars is out in front having passed waypoint 6 - with half a dozen boats a short distance behind. Family Bereavements and SuperSlaves bring up the rear.

Tack 7: The Cooler King hits the rocks of Fogo in the Cape Verde Islands and narrowly misses hitting another one when he restarts on tack 10.

Tack 9: More water born adventures from Cole - this time from the deck of Galatasarky. Neither Roman Villa or Special Riders get close enough to help save the extra tack.

Apathetic Thistle has extended his lead and is now approaching the final waypoint - Lythgoe's Disciples and hodol kutkut are close together in 2nd and 3rd coming up to waypoint 6. The Drog's Ballacks brings up the rear.

No run-agrounds although Vellus Arsefield came very close on tack 2.

Tack 13: A final dip in the ocean by Cole on-board (or off as case may be) grob's grasshoppers. Darlo Queens and LANESRA tried to help but were unsuccessful.

A Team of Johnsons and Honeyballs are leading coming up to waypoint 6 with Robots in Disguise and Naked Pirates at the back.

I think if you replay the animation I sail by laughing at him. Not that I had much to laugh about with the way things went. I was supposed to nip around the bend, not head south

First relatively decent scoring ground and I go so far off course I end up in Brazil

Capitaine Blacky (Equipe Chats Noir) would like to say "Merci" Donkeys Ride Again pour avoir aide mon "Homme à La mer"

My crew has given up trying to keep our boat afloat and we're concentrating on fitba instead.

The week began with Getafe King Life establishing himself at the front with Isaiah Forty:31 close behind. Chester Draws could have stayed with them but on tack 2 crewman Bosingwa took him in the wrong direction and it wasn't until tack 4 that he finally crossed wayline 6. By this time Getafe King Life was approaching waypoint 7 and atx1303 had moved up to 3rd.

Isaiah Forty:31 was the first to reach the final waypoint at the end of tack 5 and then a strong tack by Lampard put him within striking distance of the finish. Getafe King Life hadn't given up though and caught up by the end of tack 8. Tack 9 and Ronaldo had the distance but unfortunately his navigator was not quite up to the job as he took Getafe King Life onto the rocks just north of the finish.

Meanwhile further down the field Diminutive Midgets had a close shave on tack 7 as he just changed course in time to avoid running aground on the coast. Equipe Chat's Noir wasn't so lucky on tack 9 however and was forced to spend 2 tacks making repairs.

Getafe King Life's misfortune was all Isaiah Forty:31 needed and he finally crossed the line on tack 10 to pick up the 15 points on offer. Congratulations to skipper WHATEVER and his crew - who now will enjoy a well deserved week off in Buenos Aires.

Getafe King Life restarted on tack 12 and made no more mistakes as he picked up 2nd place and 14 points on tack 14. It was a close run thing however as atx1303 had made up alot of ground but couldn't quite close him down enough and finished a respectable 3rd on the following tack.

Chester Draws is approaching the finish with Its Just Not Cricket lying in 5th close to the final waypoint.

A quick word about Self Cleaning Ovens who had a few navigation problems during the week and finds himself in the middle of pack.

Nutstars began the week in front and had extended that lead by the end of tack 5 by which time there were 5 boats at/around waypoint 6 trying to catch up.

Further down the field tack 5 saw At it again hit the rocks north of Rio and No-Eye Deer thought he'd avoided the needle in a haystack that is the Island of Trindade but closer inspection revealed otherwise

Tack 6 and Nutstars reaches the final waypoint and sets a course for home ... but then disaster strikes as Lampard takes the leader onto the rocks on the next tack and by the time he restarts 4 other boats have made up some ground to try a challenge him for the lead.

Tack 7 also saw navigational breakdown for A Smoked Cheese Pig and Kelly's Heroes who both headed north and only corrected their courses after they had travelled 640Nm each.

Back at the front Crazy Canucks and Eenog Koning reach the final waypoint and have effectively caught up with Nutstars who couldn't seem to find any wind.

Tack 12 and Turnbull, on board Crazy Canucks, lunges for the line but his navigation is off and he runs aground leaving the way clear for Eenog Koning to finish the leg on tack 13 when Delap is at the wheel. Well done to Knulpuk and his crew for securing the 15 points in this pool

Tack 13 also found The Drogs on the rocks as he tried to earn a podium finish and the week ended with Nutstars looking comfortable to take 2nd as he is just 15Nm from the line. Crazy Canucks is 3rd (as The Drogs has yet to move back to his restart position) and will attempt the run-in again at the start of next week. Y'all be bad has moved up to 4th.


Pool C

Having started the week with a huge lead the crew on-board Apathetic Thistle were not going to make the same mistake as the leaders in the previous 2 pools and after tack 2 put him within view of the finish he pulled in some sheets and tip-toed across the line at the end of tack 4. Congratulations to skipper Flyman for a great leg and for picking up the 15 points - enjoy your week off in the Argentine capital

Meanwhile further down the fleet Galatasarky had a lucky escape on tack 5 when he just spotted land in time to change course. The same at the back on-board The Cooler King who got so close to land on tack 6 that he couldn't adjust his course enough and finally ran aground at Maceió.

At the front the race for 2nd was heating up as Lythgoe's Disciples reached waypoint 7 just ahead of hodol kutkut. The next tack (7) Lampard nearly got Lythgoe's Disciples into trouble but just pulled up in time and on tack 8 Wright-Phillips got him over the line. hodol kutkut finished on the next tack in 3rd.

Doomsday looked set to take 4th but found no wind and was passed in the final few tacks of the week by Ardley Athletic, Zuluwarriors and FC Boscoppa and they will all be trying to pick up as many points as they can at the beginning of next week.

Strange navigation by Förbrytarbeteende IK found him within the next group who have just cleared waypoint 6. The compass on board Cow Tipping Frogs also didn't seem to be working properly


Pool D

A Team of Johnsons and Honeyballs reach waypoint 6 first on tack 3 with Darlo Queens and grob's grasshoppers in hot pursuit and by the end of tack 5 A Team of Johnsons has a slight lead and the group have also been joined by LANESRA, Kazma United and Vellus Arsefield - with all these boats being widely spread out as they head west.

Tack 7 and it's still A Team of Johnsons ahead but he has taken a rather northerly direction - as has Darlo Queens and grob's grasshoppers.

Also on tack 7, but towards the back of the fleet, Robots in Disguise runs aground on the north-eastern coast of Brazil. Not a good leg for this crew.

Back to the front and tack 9 saw A Team of Johnsons, having corrected his course, reach the final waypoint with LANESRA both now with the finish line in their sights.

The following tack they moved closer but misfortune for Darlo Queens as she runs aground and is forced to make hasty repairs.

Tack 11 and LANESRA narrowly avoids a trip to the repair yards himself and is now just miles from the line. A Team of Johnsons is not too far behind and Zaki on board Honeyballs makes some good ground.

Tack 12 and a poor tack by Kirkland on LANESRA and A Team of Johnsons allows Honeyballs through with Schwarzer making a spirited leap for the line. Congratulations to skipper Cherylhoney and her crew for a fantastic win - the 15 points are all yours .

Having not moved on tack 13 LANESRA finally makes it to port on tack 14 in 2nd place. A Team of Johnsons is now just 18Nms short and should make it in 3rd on the first tack of GW11. grob's grasshoppers lies in 4th with Darlo Queens and Kazma United close in 5th and 6th.


With the top points in all pools having been decided the remainder of the points will be decided in GW11 when the 1st leg comes to a close.
