The King's Speech & 127 Hours were UK box office releases in 2011 (so they're okay to be included IMO), Inception & The Social Network were released last year over (so don't count)...

This always proves to be a stumbling block for this thread as a lot of us tend to catch movies for the first time via rentals/subscription/freeview.

My missus is a teacher and she loved the film 'Bad Teacher', so I suppose that gets my (her) vote from the list Razorback provided.

As for me, I was massively disappointed with the penultimate Harry Potter, but thought the final one made amends!

Have to say, I thought Horrible Bosses and Hit List were both great viewing, so they'd get my vote...

I saw 'I Am No.4' this week on Sky.

OK but not worthy of my vote or nomination.

I have only seen 39 of those 100+ movies, I thought Adjustment Bureau was most entertaining, but The Kings Speech was worthy of all the acolades it received, great performance from Captain Barbossa. Special mention though for Bad Teacher and Source Code.

Moneyball for me. Really got into Baseball this year and read the book earlier in the year without realising the film was due out. Not sure if released in the UK yet but well worth watching if you have any interest in Baseball

I'll go for Senna if only for the fact that when the credits rolled not a soul got up and left and also that the usual backdrop of munching and slurping just was not evident at all.

I saw Rise of the Panet of The Apes on a plane the other day, and thought it was jolly good

(the film is Rise of the Planet of The Apes , not Rise of the Planet of The Apes on A Plane, although the latter sounds OK as well :) )

Or CY was alone in the cinema throughout

(That 'usual backdrop' of eating, phones and chatting is a large part of why I never go to the cinema and so am not placed to voting in this category. Looking forward to 'Senna' when it hits the small screen so I might vote for it anyway  )

I remember the theatre trailers for Senna quite catagorically stated 'you do not have to be motor racing fan to enjoy this film'.
I beg to differ, they should have tagged that line with 'but it helps'.

Ive seen 8 off that list (about 7 of which I've been on a plane for).

In fairness, most were brilliant as well.

The King's Speech - Really good film 8.5/10
Black Swan - really good 8.5/10 (would have been an 8 if it werent for 'that' scene)
No Strings Attached - not my bag, treated Mrs Zimm to a rom-com in a moment of airplane weakness
The Adjustment Bureau - pretty disappointing with a sickening/lame love angle. Tried to be clever (matrix/inception-esque). 5/10
Tree of Life - started it on the plane… looked to have a lot of potential, but i abandoned after about 30mins as its one that looked to need concentration (and good picture/sound not offered on my flight)
Submarine - brilliant, loved it. 8/10
X-Men: First Class - for this sort of film, was very good (only previously seen the first x-men movie).
Senna - more documentary than film. Was very good, but not a cinematic masterpiece. For me 8/10 as a documentary, 7/10 as a "film".

Cave Of Forgotten Dreams.

Another good documentary I saw last weekwas Great White Silence. It's the official record of Scott's race to the Pole and was filmed 100 years ago, but was restored this year by the British Film Institute.

Saw Kill List at the weekend but it didn't really live up to the hype for me. Not seen The Rum Diary yet but looking forward to it.

Like murf, I rarely go to the cinema these days because too many films have been ruined for me by people who seem to be at a loose end for something to do, and would rather chat/eat popcorn than watch the movie. So I tend to see films a year or so after they've been released, usually on Sky Movies. The best one I've seen this year is the astonishing Winter's Bone, no contest. Runner up would be The Kids are Alright.

The most recent film I've seen is Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, which was charming and quirky but I doubt it would make my eventual 2012 Top Twenty (I'll let you know in a year's time!)

Out of interest, is the Rum Diary based on the Hunter S Thompson book?
