Out of interest, is the Rum Diary based on the Hunter S Thompson book?

yes. and depp got bruce robinson to direct as he consideres withnail and I to be one of the few perfect films. they both made a pact to stay off the pop during filming or they'd have got nothing done.

Cheers. Might have to give that a look - although god only knows how they managed to cobble a coherent film together from it. Hunter would be turning in his grave though to hear that they were tee-total whilst making the film

I have only seen 39 of those 100+ movies, I thought Adjustment Bureau was most entertaining, but The Kings Speech was worthy of all the acolades it received, great performance from Captain Barbossa. Special mention though for Bad Teacher and Source Code.

Now up to 42, I thought friends with benefits was a very good film, you can see the chemistry with Timberlake and the female lead.
Harry Potter finale was not worth all the hype.

i think bruce robinson did the screenplay adaptation as well and only kept a few original HST quotes in and essentially did a full rewrite to make something coherent. there was a couple of interviews with him floating around last week

Hi Razorback

To avoid me being afflicted by a severe strain of RSI, do you think you could shorten your list to, say, about 10 ?

Would be appreciated as my fingertips are starting to get numb just looking at that leviathan of a list

To be clear, I wasn't nominating any of those movies (I've only only seen a few of them), it was just a helpful list to jog the memories of others  .

The following three movies are my favourites from this year's releases (that I've actually seen):

I Saw The Devil
Black Swan
The Fighter

Although I can't claim to have seen all of them, this would be my abridged list going from Empire magazine, Total Film and Mark Kermode. Jason Solomons can **** off with his opinions as he's a smug pompus ar$ehole.

voted for 3 I've seen. Suspect that may differ by the time a couple of these appear on dvd.

Just watched Warrior, great performances from Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton, and support from Nick Nolte.
Strikes the perfect balance between action and emotional back story, if I had seen this earlier if would have edged out The Kings Speech, with Senna 3rd.

It's a decent flick but no where near to being the best one released in 2011...IMO  ...

Watched Black Swan over Xmas. Not impressed. Taped Kings Speech so we'll see if FISO voted correctly.

It's down to taste I suppose, but the acid tests for a movie is a) did it entertain or enlighten you? b) would you watch it again?
Some prefer American farce, over serious period drama (with history thrown in), or would always pick a huge budget cgi 'superhero' creation, Captain America was one of the movies to forget.
No doubt some people will say 'The Tree of Life' is Oscar material, I got the idea of it, but still found it heavy going.
The many varied shots of Sean Penn wandering around in a daze was hard to justify, and after the appearance of dinosaurs half way through, with one having a semblance of morality made it difficult to take the film seriously.
Personally, with a film like Hangover 2 once the jokes are out there and you know whats coming next what is the point of a re-visit?, but a dramatic moment has more resonance and is more likely to stay with you.

The problem with these polls (other than differing taste) is that we haven't seen enough movies from the year in question to be able to make an informed decision on which one was the best.

I've now seen 23 from the list that I originally posted on thread which are, in descending order of quality, as follows:

I Saw The Devil
The Fighter
Black Swan
X-Men: First Class
13 Assassins
TrollHunter
Warrior
Animal Kingdom
Stake Land
Super
Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows: Part 2
Tangled
Biutiful
Hanna
Paul
Tucker & Dale vs Evil
The Lincoln Lawyer
The King's Speech
True Grit (remake)
John Carpenter's The Ward
Route Irish
Tracker
The Mechanic (remake)
Battle: Los Angeles
Season Of The Witch
I Am Number Four

Although that's enough to tell me that 'The King's Speech' wasn't anywhere close (IMO  ) to being 2011's best release, I'm know I'm not really in a position to accurately state what the best movie from last year actually was...

Blue Valentine… I see it didnt make the shortlist.

Have just sat down to watch Biutiful… but Ms Zimm's mum has phoned up (20 mins and counting)

Anyway, there was a trailor for BV;
Anyone seen it?

Looks interesting (without me having a clue what its about)!
Anyone recommend it?

Blue Valentine was on the list I originally posted but I excluded it when bluenosey asked me to put together a short list as I thought it unlikely that many people would have actually seen it.

Scores 7.6 on IMDb so probably worth catching but personally I'm happy to wait until it makes it's debut on Sky (or one of the terrestrial channels).

P.S Biutiful is really, really good BTW but is also really, really depressing  ...

About a third of the way through (she's gone up and I'm watching FA cup highlights now).

Will have to finish it tomorrow.

Enjoyed what I've seen so far though.

Thoroughly disappointing. Appeared high on various polls.

Kind of a sexed-up Leon. Fails miserably (IMO).

I'm so far behind on that thread I never delve in.

Might do now to see which FISOers like it (give me an idea of who to avoid in future) ;)
