Let The Right One In (Razorsharp)

Although I know that FX isn't a freeview channel if you do have access to it then it's certainly worth catching the premier of 'Let The Right One In' tomorrow night (IMO  ) ...

It's not on the Blair Witch Project level but it's pretty good all the same... :P

The suggested condition was that you had seen it. I have seen it, well I've seen a bit of it before turning it off for being appalling crap that is offensive to me and my telly.

Without wanting to upset bigcliff2, 'Let The Right One In' is soooooooooo much better than the 'classic' TBWP  . I know that we didn't see eye to eye on 'Nightwatch' but as that's typically the exception rather than the rule chances are that you'll view (at the very least) LTROI as 'very decent' movie 8-) ...

Perhaps you could consider a separate category for "rite-of-passage"?

Because, let's face it, while your assessment of Top Gun is accurate, you do kind of have to see it at some point in your life, if only to allow you to walk around humming Kenny Loggins tunes when you are middle-aged

Interested in your views on Saving Private Ryan, Razorback. What in particular prevents it from being razorsharp (apart from the truly dreadful closing scene)?

And in what context have you seen it i.e. cinema/home - I first saw it on cinema release and have seen it a few times since, including on a 42" tv with a proper surround sound setup going on, and to me it is one of those films where the environment you see it in can have a definite impact on the film experience.

I first saw it at the cinema when it was originally released & I've seen it a few times since then on the 'small' screen. World War II has been the subject of soooooooo many (slight older  ) war movies that it's very hard for Saving Private Ryan to say or do anything new. Although the opening sequence is jaw droppingly good, I think in some ways it actually unbalances the movie as none of the scenes that follow really get anywhere near to the standard it sets & if I'm honest 'Saving Private Ryan' could have done with being a lot tighter time wise.

However, my main issue with this movie is the characters, I didn't find them particularly interesting and certainly didn't feel emotionally connected to them or the movie in general (it's quite possible that this 'disconnection' was caused by me thinking that a lot of the actors only seemed to be 'playing soldier' :( ).

Although I appreciate many (like yourself) rate it highly & feel that it more than warrants a 'Razorsharp' rating IMO it doesn't get anywhere near the likes of 'Platoon', 'Apocalypse Now' (the marmite of war movies  ), 'Gallipoli' or even 'The Deer Hunter'...

The beginning of Saving Private Ryan is amazing, imaginative and pretty much unforgettable. Once they get ashore it turns into a pretty conventional war film, however, with the usual Spielberg happy ending. This guy is so fixated on finding something positive in any situation that he made a feel good movie, Schindler`s List, about the holocaust. He`s a good director, but his fantasy world is a little too sunny for my taste. Mind you, I still recommend seeing Saving Private Ryan, if only for the D-Day landing scenes, which are truely groundbreaking.

Thanks to both of you for your comments. Food for thought there - I guess it is dominated by the awesome opening.

Razorback's post triggered me to ask about another film....which has completely slipped my mind :? Ho hum.

I enjoyed this more than I thought although I watched in a least 2 sittings which ruined it a little. It's a really weird little film but very engrossing. I might have to watch it again just to see if it's better in a single sitting.
