I wouldn't have said Sunshine was disappointing; it was just weird. :lol:

I think you're a little past 50%. ;)

Overrated my arse! Underrated more like...
Based on your reaction to the above comment it's probably for the best that I don't mention that I think the sequel (Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch 2) is a more effective horror movie :wink: ...
Oddly enough (or not b/c he saw it at the weekend :roll:) I was discussing this with a colleague earlier and I said that although I'm not great with horror movies this was a total let down and was far less scary than people made out. Maybe it was the hype, who knows, but I preferred the sequel; not b/c of the horror but more for the humour (and, iirc, the hot goth girl in it!).

Yep, the hype (plus the lack of a 'hot goth girl' :wink: ) definitely hurt this movie, apologies in advance to bigcliff2 but a horror movie featuring some kids getting themselves lost in a forest & climaxing with one of them standing in the basement of an abandoned house with their back facing the camera isn't really enough to send shivers down my spine :lol: . Still (just about) worth seeing IMO but best enjoyed if you go in with medium to low expectations.

Not sure what it was about the sequel that got to me, I know deep down that it isn't a particularly good movie but it certainly had a vibe that got under my skin. The characters were also more interesting than those in the first which gave an incentive to stick with the movie & find out what had happened during those 'missing hours'...

It's definitely a film that splits opinion. I personally consider it a classic, probably the best horror of the 90s.... I've always said that it works, for me anyway, on a below-the-surface level. As in you either feel the atmosphere or you don't...

To me it's certainly much more than "some kids getting themselves lost in a forest & climaxing with one of them standing in the basement of an abandoned house with their back facing the camera".

Is it not the case that part of the hype came from the fact it was cleverly trailed in the US as if it was a developing news story, in the same way that 'War of the Worlds' went out on the radio and caused panic in some quarters? This only works in the initial phase, though, hence why the hype can over-run the reality.

There are loads of movies I really love that other people simply don't 'get' but sometimes that can actually be a good thing 8-) .

TBWP doesn't do it for me but it works very well for others (including yourself) which is the main reason it got a mention (& not for the first time) on this thread...

Anyone see a film called The Yakuza?

It's on tonight on ITV at midnight, just wondered if it was worth a watch.

Haven't seen it myself (which is why it's been excluded from tonight's selections) but it gets a pretty decent score on IMDb;

The Yakuza

I think this film must have gone under radar for a lot of people. I saw it a while back on dvd having never really heard of it and didn't have the highest of expectations, but i really enjoyed it. Its very clever, has a good cast and there'll be a certain song you'll be singing to yourself for quite a while after its finished! :wink:

Strongly recommended.
