We just had fun dissecting Die Hard in my Contemporary Hollywood Film course. All about the restoration of the patriarchal order, don't you know. I love the way Holly's Rolex watch becomes the symbol of her corporate achievement and independence, but she has to give it up so Hans (the wonderful Alan Rickman) can be disposed of and she can go on living. When hubby then introduces her to good old Al as Holly Gennarro, she corrects him immediately. It's Holly McLaine. Daddy is back on top, thanks to that muscle bound rescue only a real man can deliver. Can a marriage between a far better educated and successful woman and a feisty working class guy work? In this movie, yes. In real life, not easy. By the way, the sequels are irrelevant as this was made as a one-off and stands or falls on that.
The movie works because the Willis character is funny, flawed, likeable and self critical and because the working class dudes (John, Al, Argyle) are street smart, street tough men who can think and act on their feet, unlike the idiot assistant police chief and the absurd corporate wink. Very popular in America because after they get spanked in Namn by little guys in black pajamas in this film supremacy is restored as Willis outthinks and outfights the pretentious sociopath from the Master Race and his body building Aryan flunkies. The movies, the last place America can still win anything. So on the surface we have an adventure thriller and under it we have a palatable response to feminism and a powerful appeal to ordinary Joes, who also believe their bosses are stupid jerks. John also represents the restoration of the classical hero, who was basically killed off in the late Sixties and Seventies. In short, a cowboy. Yippeeiokay MotherF'er. Not great, but quite entertaining and very successful. I actually liked Robocop, which is hysterically funny, better. Next up, Blade Runner.

When he finally returns to the swamp, Carlos finds that the area has become the new home of a New York asset-stripping monster and decides that scoring three goals may be the only way to silence the reds.

Am I right in thinking 'El Mariachi' was the original version of Desperado, and the same director did both?

Taken from Wikipedia;

'This film (Desperado) is a sequel to the independent movie El Mariachi. It is debated that it is more of a remake than an actual sequel, while the plot does differ in many ways, several scenes are similar. When they are viewed in chronological order however, the stories line up perfectly. Desperado helped to enhance the fame of Antonio Banderas and introduced Salma Hayek to American audiences.'

Based on your reaction to the above comment it's probably for the best that I don't mention that I think the sequel (Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch 2) is a more effective horror movie :wink: ...

The Blair Witch Project
Overrated my arse! Underrated more like...
Based on your reaction to the above comment it's probably for the best that I don't mention that I think the sequel (Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch 2) is a more effective horror movie :wink: ...
Oddly enough (or not b/c he saw it at the weekend :roll:) I was discussing this with a colleague earlier and I said that although I'm not great with horror movies this was a total let down and was far less scary than people made out. Maybe it was the hype, who knows, but I preferred the sequel; not b/c of the horror but more for the humour (and, iirc, the hot goth girl in it!).

Yep, the hype (plus the lack of a 'hot goth girl' :wink: ) definitely hurt this movie, apologies in advance to bigcliff2 but a horror movie featuring some kids getting themselves lost in a forest & climaxing with one of them standing in the basement of an abandoned house with their back facing the camera isn't really enough to send shivers down my spine :lol: . Still (just about) worth seeing IMO but best enjoyed if you go in with medium to low expectations.

Not sure what it was about the sequel that got to me, I know deep down that it isn't a particularly good movie but it certainly had a vibe that got under my skin. The characters were also more interesting than those in the first which gave an incentive to stick with the movie & find out what had happened during those 'missing hours'...
