I didnt watch this the other night.... wish I'd known it was on.

But agree, that scene is one of the worst I have ever seen (despite not actually seeing anything).... the thought of it goes through me every time.

I reckon that's what makes it so bad, you see what's going to happen, but for the rest you have your imagination to thank

For fans of French film noir, Film 4 have a mini-season of Jean-Pierre Melville films on late. Le Doulos is on tonight, and Le Cercle Rouge tomorrow, both around 11pm. Although the real gem might have been last night's Bob le Flambeur.

Last night I saw Le Diner De Cons on BBC4, a superb French comedy about a group of arrogant friends who invite idiots to dinner so they can laugh at them. It doles out eminent justice in the way that only French films can & in terms of structure, situation & performance it's one of the best comedies I've seen in ages...

A Love Divided
Bit late to say "watch this" as it's just finishing,
but what a great film this is
Based on a true story, it is superbly done with excellent acting.

IMDB info (describes it much better than I can  )

"A Love Divided is about a true incident in Co. Wexford in the late 1950's. In order to marry a Catholic, a Protestant woman signs a 'ne temere' pledge to raise their children in the Catholic church. When their oldest daughter reaches the age to start school and the Protestant mother decides she does not want to send her daughter blindly to Catholic school, pledge or no, a string of events takes place that affects the lives of the town and those outside it.
The acting is brilliant. Liam Cunningham is magnificent as the husband caught between his religion and the family he loves. Orla Brady is equally magnificent as the defiant wife. Some may view this film as another show to the world that Ireland is a land of religious intolerance. I believe the fact that Irish film makers are now portraying incidents in our past such as the one in A Love Divided proves we recognize our past and are no longer doomed to repeat it. "

Just taped the four hour 1924 silent film Greed, 4 hours and 15 minutes. It's supposed to be great but I need a long lonely evening for it. My kids say "no way Dad, it's all yours."

There's a mini Fritz Lang season on BBC2 this week, of his Hollywood films: While The City Sleeps tonight at 1.30 am, Beyond A Reasonable Doubt tomorrow at 12.45am, and The Big Heat on Thursday at 12.05am. Set those videos/hard drive recorders!

I've got to admit ..... I'm a bit lazy when it comes to foriegn language films. I've a few favourites, but I need to be in a certain frame of mind to give them that little extra effort that subtitles demand.

Well, last night I was unexpectedly drawn into a Film4 movie that utterly absorbed me - a Chinese film from 2000 called 'Devils on the Doorstep'.

It is set in China during the latter days of WWII. A peasant finds someone knocking at his door in the dead of night. When he answers it he finds a gun pointed at his head:
"Close your eyes! Close them!! ...... I'm leaving two Japs with you. I'll be back for them later. If they die or escape you and your village will be killed. Look after them."

And so the story develops .....

Great acting. Great camerawork. Interesting story, sometimes comic, sometimes poignent, sometimes pathetic. Extra-ordinary denuement.

If it's repeated, watch it!
If it's not .... find it & rent it!!

It's a damned good film! :P

I love foreign films Flyman. There is great stuff being made out there which gives us insight into the human condition and opens a window to a different cultures.
