Just wondering if any of you guys are familiar with 'American' style draft leagues for golf. I have played these for NFL but wasn't really aware of them for golf. I have come across quite a lot recently where so called experts are ranking pro's in order of value for varying formats.

Rob Bolton on pgatour.com seems to talk quite a lot mentioning
Draft leagues
Keeper leagues
Dynasty leagues
Salary games
One and done leagues
Duffer leagues

http://www.pgatour.com/2010/r/12/23/fantasy-primer-2011/index.html

Rotoworld.com also seems to have quite a lot on this including offering a draft kit.

Was hoping some Fiso members could tell me if these type of leagues are available to play online ( although I can't seem to find any ) or are they basically just organised by a group of mates with a spreadsheet etc.
If anyones played these ( particularly the draft style) I would be interested to know some details on them.

Thanks in advance :D

I think they are basically leagues set up by mates rather than online official ones. I think Bolton mentioned once he's been in a rolling league for 15 yrs or something :o

I've asked Mr. Green at OFL if they could expand their golf offering to include some of these formats - i.e. a draft league run on the same basis as the Pro football game.

1 & done & duffer are pretty easy to do - get the list of tournaments and then pick either your favoured winner & duffer each week. Just need one guy to collate entries & update each week to make sure no-one has picked twice.

Currently playing a few teams in Yahoo's NHL Fantasy Hockey which is a draft based league, very high maintenance as they seem to play every day in the NHL and the squad needs constant adjustment!

Have not played any fantasy golf draft leagues, they seem to be very much US based but happy to take part in a FISO one if there is sufficient interest.

Have a great New Year's Eve :P

Sorry for taking so long to add to this thread.

Unfortunately, it's just not financially viable to extend our current golf game to the "professional" version. It's surprising as to how much specific work is required for such a site and there's just no way we could justify the resources when we'd be very hard pushed to get 50 leagues of 10.

Ach well, it was worth a try.

Not to worry, I've got a plan. We can always come up with our basic draft-based comp. I was mulling running a trial so we'll see if there is interest and then I can work out the rules!

10 entrants for the trial period, so me +9...maybe running for couple of months (I reckon I should aim to have any trial done and dusted before the Masters, a) because we'll all be busy then with OFL and b) in case it works and we want a proper version going.

I'll take positions from FISO/TFG Leagues in reverse to determine order of picking (anyone fancying it who wasn't in either will get a middling draw). Who's for it then?

I'm up for this as well.

I was considering starting an auction style comp but was put off by the time I would need to spend working out the weekly scores.

How would it work el-pappje?
Blind bidding by pm? Would we need a non-playing auctioneer?
Live bidding may be a problem as some Fiso'ers are in different time zones.
Would you be limited to X amount of players, or could you spend your budget on as many players as you want?

Hope this works out, I like the idea of a comp where you have sole ownership of a player. :)

Sounds like a plan - and I love it when one of those comes together.

Happy to make up the numbers. 8-)

I'll need to check if Kdub actually wants in or was just bantering. That will also make the timezone issue more pertinent for this trial run.

I'll hopefully flesh this out a bit more later today. Rough idea for this trial run is:

2months/8 weeks.
10 players, no restriction on Tour
Might try a $-based game for ease rather than concoct a scoring system at this stage, so tourney winnings for a player are summed for your score.
Then I need to work on the auction, doubt we can get 10 online at same time so will have a think.

Count me in in Kdub was bantering or first reserve if he wasn't.

Britinus - you're definitely a reserve I'm afraid. Spencer4 is one ahead of you and he is 10th man if Kdub doesn't want to play this time round. if Kdub is in, Sp4 becomes 1st reserve.

I'm currently thinking of assigning a budget of $10m to each player, which must be spent on 2 players from the OWGR Top 20 (which I'll publish). These will be organised by sealed bid and started once I have sent mine to an independent party. Bids start at 0.5m and must go up in 0.5m increments.

Once the 20 "marquee" names are decided, the remaining 8 (rosters of 10) can be done fairly simply, with each player in turn posting on the draft thread who they want to take - that way everyone can see who is taken and make it fairly rapid to fill teams (I hope!).

Not going to go more complicated than that currently, we'll see how we go and what might need changing for a season-long version.

Tourneys will start with Farmers Insurance Open & Volvo Champions I think, then run to the WGC-Cadillac at Doral.

Will let you know when Kdub responds.

Righto, Kdub is in, so the runners & riders are (not in draft order):

Me
Kdub
Toffeelover
AKNel1
foreverengland
MU #1 fan
Shafty1
polarbear
Trickster1
Horton Mumblemouse

Reserves:
Spencer4
Britinus

Draft will be in 2 stages: first up, each of us will PM SamD with bids for marquee names from the OWGR Top20 as at the time I publish it. These will be from a budget of $10m and the minimum bid is $0.5m, while bids must be in sizes of $0.5m (so 0.5m, 2.0m, 2.5m etc.).

If two or more people bid the same for a player, the winner will be determined by draft order. I will be drafting from 10th i.e. last, so if I bid the same as e.g. Shafty, Shafty gets the player. Once the first bids are done, we will finish up any remaining slots by the same method.

After that, we will then pick the remaining 8 squad members by a turn-by-turn draft. #1 will post their choice of player on the thread I'll create, then 2 will follow etc. etc. and we can all see who has been drafted to avoid doubling up. Hopefully it'll work smoothly.

Thanks to SamD for offering his adjudicating abilities and to you all for volunteering. Competition thread will be set up later on with timings for the marquee draft. If anyone knows of any times they will not have access in the next few days/week, please post so we can work around it.

The randomiser has worked its magic & the draft lineup to serve as tie-breaker on the marquee names and order of chooser on the remaining players is this:

Polarbear
Trickster1
Kdub
foreverengland
shafty1
Horton M
AKNel1
MU #1 Fan
Toffeelover
Me

Once the new Top 20 in OWGR are confirmed next week I'll PM you all with a first deadline.

Just to clarify, do we use our 10m purely to bid for our 2 marquee names with the remaining 8 going on a draft basis spread over 8 rounds like the NFL........or does our budget have to cover the whole squad of 10?
