I have a Samsung 50" LED TV; picture is great, but sound is mediocre. I am not tech-savvy, but am told a sound bar or external speakers might improve this considerably. The room the TV is in is approx 20'x25", ie fairly big. I would like any external speakers to be discrete, and with minimal wires trailing around. Hence, aesthetically, am leaning to a sound bar - these seem to come in all shapes and sizes, but presumably a Samsung might be better for compatibility purposes? Simplicity of use also vital.

Any recommendations on a budget of £500-£700?

If it makes any difference, the TV is on a stand in a living room; it is not wall-mounted.
