LOG..................................

The acting of Di Caprio and Nicholson is the only thing worth seeing in this dross , They both played their roles in a wink film with aplomb..
That apart, the film was way too long ( 2 and arf hours) with the ending'/finale lasting all of about 2 mins with the eventualities poorly predictable.
To believe there were several undercover cops working undercover with no detection on eitherside makes the american police unit look as bout as useful as the Yorkshire Police for their handing of the Ripper case or Hillsborough. I also think the film was way too elongated in parts and skipped in others. Twas as if the writer was running out of paper at the end of every chapter , consequently cramming everything onto one page, when short of paper and inspiration.
I'd give it 4/10 and find it incredulous, so far, i am in the minority.
Judge for yourself, but IMO well overhyped.

It goes down as the worst ending i've ever seen .

Just to give your review some substance Dot, could you name a few films which you rate as good (and a few other duffers).

Cheers

Does it make sense to say its hard to remember the shit, its easy to remember the creme.
Films i can recall that are dross( i dont go alot, but ought to as i get complimentarys as my sons works part-time at the cinema) are Superman, Bigfish and i'm struggling.
Films i really enjoyed at the times they came out that spring readily to mind are- in no particular order- The Green Mile, Jaws,Fields Of Dreams, Midnight Express, Shawshank Redemption, Mississippi Burning.

I may add more to the dross if i can recall on an edit.

Your instincts are not wrong Dot. There were some fine moments but all in all it's a bit of a mess. The less said about the tortured story line the better. When a film doesn't ring true it's never a good sign. Great use of music, some memorable scenes, but not in a class with Mean Steeets, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver and other great Scorcese films.

Sorry guys, I disagree.

I really enjoyed the film, thought the acting was top class (Nicholson was IMO amazing), plot good and the story ripped along well - didn't feel like 2.5 hours to me at all. Scorcese at something like his best.

My only real criticism was that some of the cuts were a bit clumsy, but for pure entertainment I'd give it the thumbs up. Classy movie.

Nah, it disappointed yer old da. Nicholson, whilst good, hammed it up a little, and I didn't really buy into his status as the crime world's Mr Big. Di Caprio was, as usual, superb and was the major success of the film. Is he still regarded as 'young'? If he is there can't be many finer young actors in Hollywood today. Even if he's not young he's right up there as a box office draw for yer old da. Damon was his usual one-dimensional self - not having him at all as the man on the inside. Matt Damon for me peaked in A Beautiful Mind, and has not scaled anywhere near the same heights since. Wahlberg is always good, I pretty much love him in everything, but he was a little over-the-top if I'm being particularly critical.

Have to agree with the opinions on the ending. Rushed, forced, inadequate, unrealistic - all words that spring to mind. NOT the best film you'll see all year, NOT Nicholson's best performance in recent years, NOT a great return to form from Scorcese. Decent at best but a let-down given the hype.

I can't even bring myself to mention it in the same critique as G**DF****S and C****O.

I have to disagree. I quite enjoyed it actually. The performances from Di Caprio, Damon and in particular Nicholson were astonishing. I always find that if the cast is good enough, the film sort of 'comes together', but maybe that's just me? :?

Hold on Tubes me old mucker i said the acting of Nicholson and Di caprio as not in question and was all that held a feeble, unbelievable storyline together.
The film was cack and more like a childs comicstrip for reality purposes.

You want astonishing - see Helen Mirren in The Queen. No flamboyant flapping around to draw attention like Jack or Al Pacino. Without one false moment, working from inside the tight little box that is the Queen's personality, she manages to let us know with the tiniest of gestures and expressions exactly what she is thinking and feeling at all times. THAT is acting. Her performance is so brilliant you don't even notice her. You just believe that's the Queen up there on the screen, fuly revealed. Stuff the Academy awards. Stuff Meryl Streep. Mirren is the world's best actor.
