are they 'cool' for a music fan to like or are they middle of road music for people who don't like music?

can never work it out.

I like 'em!

A bit like the Lightning Seeds for me. Brodie was the Bunnymen's producer and his stuff is clearly a follow up to their albums just before he released stuff. (There is also a Liverpool line to The Lotus Eaters, if you are of a certain age; some of whom were in the far superior, but lesser known Wild Swans.)

I would say cheesy as they probably inspired the recentish generation of shite easy listening stuff like Keane. (I should confess to listening to Keane when I realised that part of the problem with new music of that time was that oldies liked it, when I\we should be moaning about "what is that trash the kids are listeningn to?"; "they don't write songs like that anymore" etc.)

Some of their stuff is excellent but then again I am a fair bit older than most on here. I noticed Crowded Scouse were on at The Mathew Street Festival in Liverpool over the weekend but I missed them as I decided to watch Dizzy Lizzy who were excellent and had a lead singer who looked a fair bit like the late great Phil Lynott.
My thoughts on CH are that they did some really good songs but also did some dirgy ones as well.

They are certainly not cool - but they are quite good and write well crafted 'nice' songs.. I could only listen to Woodface or a Greatest Hits though as I don't like them enough to bother with other albums.

The song 'Locked Out' was in the film 'Reality Bites' = a whole lot of cool/hipster cred.

I personally like their sound, but wouldn't be the first band I would mention if I was trying to impress with musical interests.

I guess they were a bit cheesy but they wrote some great songs. And anyway, does it matter?

A slice o cheese but well crafted tunes, daliesque visuals and a voice in songwriter Finn as good as Glen Tilbrook of Squeeze.
Better Be Home Soon, Locked Out, Four Seasons in One Day, Distant Sun, Fall at Your Feet, Throw Your Arms Around Me all good early stuff. Class a capella too. Never been angry enough but there's plenty of that elsewhere. Good Band.

If you like a band or a song does it matter whether someone else thinks it's cool or cheesy? If you like them, enjoy it.

Definitely Maybe is one of the greatest debut albums of all time 8-)

OK, some of the albums that followed were not up to scratch but the sheer quality of early releases can be told by the B-sides "Talk Tonigh", "Acquiesce", "Rockinn Chair" and of course, "Half The World Away". Only The Jam previously had such quality B sides.

Liam could be a complete tool but he had the swagger and the two Gallaghers complemented each other nicely (well for a while). I saw them last ever gig - end of an era for me, having seen them first in '95 when guitar based music could reach the upper reaches of the chart. I used to buy about 5 singles a week. It felt like we had something then (Britpop, New Labour, Euro 96). Just a pipe dream I suppose.

As for Crowded House, I don't think they are cheesy. Neil Finn was on Jools last week with his new band. Four Seasons in one Day still sounds great IMO.
