Goose is traditional, Roast Beef used to the Christmas meal for the Landed Gentry - If you have the money Roasted Rib or Roasted Sirloin.

However if you really want more than one meat on Christmas then try Turducken

http://homecooking.about.com/od/turkeyr ... kensbs.htm

A Whole Chicken inside a Whole Duck inside a Whole Turkey - you can even have 3 different stuffings

You can simplify it by having just the breast meat.

And if that's not enough for you try the 'True Love Roast' with 12 different birds stuffed inside one another (one for each day of Christmas) 1. Turkey, 2. Goose, 3. Barbary duck, 4. Guinea fowl, 5. Mallard, 6. Poussin, 7. Quail, 8. Partridge, 9. Pigeon squab, 10. Pheasant, 11. Chicken, 12. Aylesbury duck

Turkey is OK but would not be my choice. I have it because it is not my choice.

we always have steak and chips for dinner on crimbo day :D

mainly becasue the family is dispursed so they come round the week before when we have our roast, usually turkey and lamb

I guess the point of this is to say have whatever your family like, its a day to eat what you like

Roast rib of beef and a chicken for the kids. Can't stand turkey, dry tasteless stringy peasant fodder

Turkey isn't really traditional is it?

It doesn't even date back 100 years I don't think?

In spain they have a specially meal, often sea food, not prescriptive - people have different things depending on what they like. It's about family and company and great food.

Which I think is the way to go.

But I'd have ham if you must have turkey and want another meat.

You just have to know how to cook it. Although, Gordon Ramsey cuisine is usually well beyond my resources (and palate), his Xmas Turkey recipe is worth checking out - follow that and you will get a succulent and very tasty piece of meat.

I still love Turkey and Ham on Xmas Day, despite it being summer out here. Have a BBQ at least once a week, so nothing special about doing that on a special day.

Turkey, sausages, bacon, sausage meat stuffing.

That's enough meat.

Turkey's going to be more expensive this year, now that the Chinese have acquired a taste for it as they've been snapping up all the turkey feed :D

I'm only 40 so it is tradition for me

I like Christmas dinner being a little different as it's a special day and being a top chef, I can make Turkey taste good

If turkey was so bloody good, we'd eat it every week.

We dont because it's shite. and dry.

I'd much rather have a nice chicken.

After saying that, we always have another piece of meat (last couple of years has been a beef joint slow roasted for 24 hours at about 50 degrees).

We're having hare this year because a farmer up the road has a glut and is gonna shoot some.

It's a good point but you buy a cheap supermarket chicken and it's just as bad.

Turley crown, wine, butter under skin...not dry and very tasy IMO.

that's the thing though, to make turkey taste like something nice (i.e. not turkey) you have to smear it with all kinds of shit

beef, lamb, pork , chicken. remove wrapping , bit of salt and pepper , place in oven, job done,

serve with sprouts, roasties and yorkshire pudding

3-4 hours later, house full of meaty man farts

anything EXCEPT turkey for me - last couple of years have featured venison (with a red wine, shallot and tomato sauce on pasta), guinea fowl (with olives, braised in white wine), and 4 x quail (each done with different stuffings) - an excuse to splash out and try something different, surely?! And on any other day, life would be too short to stuff a quail.
