We were planning on trying to make the walk fun for them. They are both quite interested in many things so were also going to impress them with our knowledge of the City :)

Just to put this fella to bed....

National Express coach was 30 minutes late into Victoria so we had to get a cab to make sure we got to the theatre in time. Came in at £10.40 (so £11 for cash).

Show finished at 5pm and our coach wasn't going home until 8:30 so we walked back. Taking in Trafalgar Square and Buck Palace enroute. The kids loved it!

Out of interest, if you are walking away from Buck Palace, at the end of the mall on the right hand side you can see a huge white building (with the eye just behind it). WHat's the building? It looks quite official ;-)

Spot the country bumkin.....

Looks like Admiralty House, to me.

With the little help from Google Maps.

Only just seen this thread, but if you have a similar query in future you can google "london cab fare calculator" or similar and you are presented with a choice of calculators.

Out of interest I entered details of your trip and gave 15.30 hrs as the starting time. The answers based on typical traffic at that time of day were; weekday £9.10, weekend £10.60 - so assuming that you travelled this weekend, you weren't overcharged. :)

Interestingly the recommended route was across Westminster Bridge and back across Waterloo Bridge, rather than via Whitehall.
