Yes...the rock stage equivalent of the War of the Roses. Great performance of a brilliant song from one of my Top 10 albums of all time.

My contender is Lynyrd Skynard's stellar performance of Free Bird at Knebworth in August 1976...

Slighty influenced, I must admit, by the fact that I was one of the masses in the audience - but they really did steal the show (far away) from the Rolling Stones and I think that this was the most-requested concert footage in the history of the OGWT.

One thing that does strike me about (relatively) old rock concert footage - particularly from the UK - is how passive the audience are in comparision with recent times (e.g. clips of The Killers and Muse from Glastonbury or AC/DC from Donnington) - might be something to to with the drugs of the day, I guess?!

In terms of a 'performance', The Sensational Alex Harvey Band on The Old Grey Whistle Test takes some beating.

Also tried to find KT Tunstall's performance of Black Horse and the Cherry Tree that she performed at the Mercury Music Awards. It was amazing… but for the life of me, I couldnt find that version… here's a poorer substitute;

Thought of another one from TOGWT….. Meatloaf and a woman (excuse my ignorance). That was an amazing performance too.

Think they end up kissing - quality showmanship (the whole thing, not just the kiss).

What a great show that is/was. I only have DVD's to rely on….. none of it is a fond memory for me; i wish i could have been around to watch it at the time.

Jimi Hendrix - Izabella at Woodstock '69.

The guitar tone, the solo with the teeth, the shape throwing. Has it all.

I've been looking for a thread like this. It's all down to personal choice and the kind of music you like, I've got 2 exceptional vocal performances to put forward.

Judy Garland performing old man river. Traditionally performed by an afro-american man, a petite white girl brings new emphasis to a great song. At the height of her self destructive phase, so vulnerable and almost unhinged. Mesmerising to watch her - but you have to watch the whole video.

http://youtu.be/5g4wnWILwSI

Paul Williams of the Temptations performing For once in my life. An amazing voice, a tortured soul and a performance full of emotion (and sweat!).

Saw Zoo TV at Wembley and it blew me away. Without doubt the best live act when they were in their pomp IMO, but I wasn't born when Led Zep and Hendrix were around so can't comment on them!

Blimey where do you start????

Possibly my best ever would be:

Yes at Bingley Hall in about 1975

National Health at the Mayfair Suite in Brum in 1977

Rachel Unthank and the Winterset in Lichfiled a couple of years back

If I give it any more thought it will change several times tonight. :D

Have seen some great performances, but probably greatest was Bob Marley just incredible had audience in his hands. But if could go back in time to see a performance it would be any Who concert in 1968, no other group comes even close to them at there best, they were just amazing from start to finish

Saw him do Star Spangled Banner using feedback from Mike stands, how he did not kill himself no idea, but Who far better stage performers, he would do things in a set that left you amazed but whole act in my view not as good as many from that era.

No it was Hammersmith (think it was 76), we were 2nd house, the first house would not leave and it for a while looked at if there would be trouble as we tried to get in and they wanted to see him again, this little tiny guy wandered on to stage told them to leave and they did, have been to hundreds of concerts of all different types and venues but never seen anything like that, he was Hypnotic

Amazing.. Over the years have probably watched every bit of footage available and have always said that a Marley concert would be where my time machine would head first before anywhere else. The fact that you have highlighted Marley as your best live concert kind of backs up everything I have ever thought.

Reeeeeeeeeespect 8-)

Glad I logged in tonight.

I'm off to bed to dream of that time machine!
