Been treating myself to a Bank Holiday weekend of a few of the more recent films which should just be coming onto many radars soon:

The Killer Inside Me Casey Affleck as a cowboy sheriff turned murderer. Slow pace similar to No Country for Old Men, but nowhere near as good. I'd definitely recommend a watch tho - Affleck plays a good baddie.

Wild Target Can't go wrong with Bill Nighy  Good little film, lots of fun, and more importantly lots of Bill Nighy

The Killing Jar Moody, slow film set in an out of the way american cafe. Customers are shot & held hostage type story. Not brilliant, but kept me entertained. Michael Madsen & Michael from LOST

Killers Ashton Kutcher & Katherine Heigl in a pretty farcical fun romp about a retired hitman whose bosses are not happy he retired. Not as funny as it tries to be but could fill a cple of hours when nothing else on.

Scott Pilgrim Versus the World Bit disappointed actually cos I like Michael Cera. It's like a film the bloke from Eternal Sunshine woulda made when at college -pretty odd :?

The Expendables Very good 8-)

The A-Team Very good too 8-)

Piranha Teeeeeeerrrrrible!!! Even got bored of Kelly Brook showing her boobs off at every opportunity. Moderately decent attempt at explaining where the piranhas came from, but not a patch on the original.

In my searches I came across Titanic 2 - storyline is that another cruise takes place 100 years on from the first and results in another crash (presumably an iceberg...). No thank you

Now, toss up between the new Adam Sandler & the new Will Ferrell films to finish the night - a winner both ways

Cheers! Have added a few of these to my Netflix queue.

Say it isn't so! I'd read very good reviews of this (no, really). In 3D and poking fun at itself, was touted as a movie basically designed just to have fun showing Bites & Boobs in 3DD. Even Rotten Tomatoes has it at 75%.

Scary. I've just gone back over the last couple pages and looked up (on netflix) the movies you've recommended, and except for one, got predictions of nearly 4 stars for each (although I have to admit I didn't like 'Sexy Beast' even a little).

I've subscribed to Netflix since Jan of 2003 (a Christmas present), have rated over 1500 movies, and come to trust the recommended "Movies You'll Love" algorithem with a very high degree of confidence. Of every 20 movies or so I look up, I'll generally get 1 or 2 that predict I'll rate more than 3 stars. All but one you listed on the last page is predicted to get a rating from me of over 3.5 stars. Statistically speaking, you and I like exactly the same movies.

Watched this last week and although it wasn't as depressing as I'd be led to believe it was relentlessly bleak. Not really a movie that can be enjoyed on any level but it is worth seeing IMO (albeit maybe no more than once)...

On DVD, 3 stars from me. Would have been better on the big screen, but had also read the book first which always diminishes the film.

Sorry Cinci - afraid so! I love my B Movies and put up with anything, but this was pretty poor. It succeeds in bites n boobs in 3D yeah (altho not as many shots of the fish as they coulda done IMO) but if it's gonna market itself as a Piranha remake it needs to be better.

I'd much prefer they remade Piranha in a more serious-ish style (eg like Jaws) - and then called this film 'Killer Fish' and left the Piranha legacy alone for someone who could do a better job

Either that, or I'm wrong and need to chill out :D

Grown Ups The new Adam Sandler one - group of ex-college guys meet up many moons later on a vacation. Feels a little like they all sat together at an awards show and decided to do a film - no real bite to it. A few funny bits, like the "Arrow Roulette" and the banter amongst each other. Not one of his best tho :(

The Other Guys Again, not Will Ferrell at the top of his game - but still enjoyable. He pairs up with Mark Wahlberg in the tried n tested "mis-matched cop partners" storyline, cue the ad-lib fest and sick one-liners. Loved the opening 10 minutes with Samuel L Jackson & Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson - any scene with Samuel shouting is a good scene 8-)

Saw Toy Story 3 last night, and its just as good as 1 and 2, in other words it's another 10/10. Saw it in 3D. Not aware I was wearing the glasses after 5 minutes but TBH I don't think the 3D added that much to the experience.

Went with the family and we'd have quite happily stocked up with more popcorn and watched it all over again.

Just saw "Kick Ass". What a great movie. The final "hallway" scene is a true classic.

The movie was okay, 6/10 because the big flaw in it was it didn't know whether it wanted to be a comedy or be taken seriously. It was schizophrenic at times.

I took it as an obvious comedy that had a potentially real idea - i.e. that any tube in a tracksuit/balaclava get up could tackle societies underbelly with sticks...

It must take a different mind-set than mine to see this as anything other than a comedy.

Spoiler Alert.....

Piranha is quality. Kelly Brook's acting is superb, although I missed most of the dialogue. Lots of nubile young women gyrating in skimpy bikinis at spring break, a bloke trying to make a soft core pornographic film where the excellent Ms Brook and another stunningly fit blonde (forgot her name) swim artistically in the, ahem, nude. There's also a wet t-shirt contest and topless paraglider that goes chest first into the water. The camera is cleverly placed just below the water to give you the full 3-D experience and there are also some lingering shots of the delightful Ms Brook.

My viewing was only spoilt by a female voice behind saying sarcasticaly "oh pleeease" during the nude swimming scene. No manners, some people  . For some strange reason, most of the blokes hardly moved during the movie.

Fantastic film and in 3-D too. This is up there for me with the classics. It really perked me up. I give it 9.5 out of 10. Would have been a 10 apart from some stupid side plot involving fish :?

Watched this earlier today & really, really enjoyed it. However, I do think that this is a real 'love it or hate it' type of flick & certainly isn't for everyone. If you're a fan Nic Cage's 'edgier' performances and/or aren't easily offended then this gritty black comedy could very well be the movie for you 8-) ...

Just watched Kick-Ass. Brilliant!

A few on here have said the same thing, so add me to that list. It's way more than just a beat-em-up,

Hit Girl is an awesome character, probably one of the best I've ever seen. Kept rewinding the "it's all under control boss" bazooka scene , really had me chuckling that bit

Wall Street 2

Good film. Not as good as the first IMO, but still a good story. Shia Leboeuf's star is rising more & more. Was good to see Gordon Gekko again 8-)

The Losers

Enjoyable tongue in cheek shoot em up which basically felt like a little less star studded version of The Expendables :D Worth a watch tho, some good action sequences & cple of chuckles along with a decent story line.

Has got Idris Elba & Chris Evans who are always good, along with Zoe Saldana who is very easy on the eye

Knight & Day

Much better than I thought it would be. Bit far fetched, but it means to be that way and so is enjoyable. Two good characters.

Red

Decent film. Some great action scenes, altho seemed to lose its way a little. Some quirky characters for Mary Louise Parker, John Malkovich & Helen Mirren whilst Bruce Willis puts in his usual good shift. Add Brian Cox & Morgan Freeman into the mix and its a solid cast.

Both films worth a watch

Watched 'Pandorum' the other night. Been meaning to see it for a while as for a sci-fi enthusiast (but not in a geeky way you understand!) it ticked all the right boxes. Pinched from imdb.....

Two crew members are stranded on a spacecraft and quickly - and horrifically - realize they are not alone. Two astronauts awaken in a hyper-sleep chamber aboard a seemingly abandoned spacecraft. It's pitch black, they are disoriented, and the only sound is a low rumble and creak from the belly of the ship. They can't remember anything: Who are they? What is their mission? With Lt. Payton staying behind to guide him via radio transmitter, Cpl. Bower ventures deep into the ship and begins to uncover a terrifying reality. Slowly the spacecraft's shocking, deadly secrets are revealed...and the astronauts find their own survival is more important than they could ever have imagined.

Pretty much in the space-horror genre along with the likes of Event Horizon and Sunshine. More action-packed than the latter, but more satisfying as a whole than the former. I really enjoyed this, and i think i benefited from not reading to much about it and not seeing the trailer. Think it bombed at the box office which automatically makes it cooler in my eyes! An under the radar gem....

I glad you liked it. After giving it such high marks, I was worried I might have over-sold it.

I don't know how many of the extras you watched (I didn't see them all), but it sounds like there might have been some good stuff left on the cutting room floor. The "making of" video included a few minutes on the courtroom scene (which didn't make the cut), and the entire walk-run scene (showing how to keep up with running kids while walking) is a very funny concept, but evidently didn't translate well to the screen.

The original screenplay also had the grad-student filmmaker on trial for complicity (which explains the cut court-room scene), but they left it out. For the better I think - I don't need the moral lessons in my dark humor films.

yeah - the trial woulda been overkill. we got the idea.

was good waiting for them to slowly realise that it was her that was the virgin he was after. i actually clocked it coulda been her fairly early but wasn't sure it was gonna go that way and thought they might stick with kelly, became pretty obvious after they walked in on her in the bedroom tho :D

didn't get any extras as i downloaded mine, woulda been nice to have seen more of the running/walking scene - but still. i got a good belly laugh out of what i saw

Haven't posted on here for a while, here are some of my faves from the last few months:

The Town - top class heist movie with Ben Afflect on great form as star & director. Highly recommended. 9/10

The Social Network - Well told story about the birth of the Facebook phenomena. I feel that it demonised Zuckerberg somewhat, can't believe he was really that much of an asshole. Still, good watch. 7/10

Kick-Ass - Echo all the comments on here. Probably my joint favourite film of the year with 'The Town'. 9.5/10

Hot Tub Time Machine - Great 'Back to the 80's' nostalgia comedy. Predictable and corny but loads of fun. 8/10

Bad Lieutenant - A bit marmite as Razorback mentioned. I liked it, the missus didn't. Worth a watch if you like Cage. 7/10

The Disappearance of Alice Creed - Nice simple little Brit-flick about a kidnapping gone wrong. A must if you like Gemma Arterton ;-) 8/10

Brooklyn's Finest - 3 Bad Lieutenants. Decent flick though with a powerful ending. 7/10

I have also been indulging my penchant for horror. Have delved into the world of French shock-horror and can recommend the following:

Martyrs
Switchblade Romance
Frontier(s)

Looking forward to watching Paranormal Activity 2, and even more so .REC 2. The first .REC I thought was superb and apparently the sequel doesn't disappoint.
