Saw a terrific little film last night. A wonderful 2007 musical set on the streets of Dublin, called Once. It stars the guy who played guitar in The Commitments as a gifted street musician, plus a talented 17-year-old female Czech immigrant. The music scenes, especially one in a music store, are pure magic. It's a love story, but bittersweet. Highly recommended. Surely someone on here must have seen this.

Pouzer - we seem to be into the same kind of films, so having browsed a couple of pages in this thread (for the first time in a good few months!), I've added to my list of want-to-see:

Nine Queens
Adaptation
Chinatown
Cache
The White Ribbon
Once

Once got 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, and my wife is from a Dublin suburb so should appreciate this. Been meaning to catch Chinatown for a few years now. Will let you know my thoughts.

Comments on a few other posts:

The Piano Teacher - yes agreed, very difficult to watch but enjoyable nonetheless
The Lives of Others - one of my all time favourites

One I did see a few months ago that I've not seen mentioned - Great Expectations (Lean's 1947 Dickens adaptation) - beautiful story and brilliantly shot. Love it.

Once is great (if you go back even further in this thread you'll find me raving about it too!) If you love Dublin you'll like it even more.

Saw the excellent Let the Right One In last night. It's about a teenage vampire - but it couldn't be more different from Twilight. It's more a horror film based around the relationship between two 12-year-old outcasts. It's Swedish, and if any of you have been watching the Wallander series on TV (the Swedish one, not the Kenneth Branagh imitation), the mood and directing is very similar. If this is a reflection of what it's like living in Sweden, no wonder they're such a suicidal race :?

Yes, Billy was first to praise Once, although I didn't know that until I posted about it. Looks like you have some good films to watch Nhat. I just finished watching a terrific German Film, Revanche, plus the excellent but exceedingly profane TV series Deadwood. Ian McShane is unforgettable. Now I am working my way through the five seasons of The Wire, in my view the best program in television history, for the second time, and indulging myself in the films of the late Japanese master, Yasujiro Ozu. I have now watched at least once every Ozu film released on DVD in North America and am totally addicted. It is a very, very different style, so not for everyone. Anyone interested should begin with Tokyo Story, the 1953 film generally considered his masterpiece. Surely the best film ever made about the conflicts between generations of a family and the inevitability of change. Brilliant and powerful.

 How! I struggle to watch a few episodes of TV shows a week, let alone any of my movie back-catalogue.

It's called retirement plus divorce. No more bosses. I watch very little non-sport current TV, except the odd film. The only 2 series I watched this year were Lost and Breaking Bad. Next week I will begin watching Season 4 of Mad Men. I also just re-watched the fabulous 6-hour documentary on the US civil rights movement of the 1950s and early 1960s, Eyes on the Prize. It is still stunning to see 1965 footage of a racist American sheriff in Selma, Alabama, referring to the great Martin Luther King as Martin Luther Coon. Shocking to realize blacks were regularly murdered by white racists, savagely beaten in the streets for daring to demonstrate non-violently, denied the right to vote, refused entrance to all-white schools and universities, forced to sit in the back of buses and give up their seats to whites only 50 years ago in the USA. The American south has a lot to answer for.

Pleased to confirm that this is easily the best movie I've seen this year and I seriously doubt that will have changed by the end of December.

The only down side to this movie was that for a good few hours after I'd left the cinema, reality seemed less...'real' than it had before  ...

My wife heard a pretty negative review on Front Row but having seen a few others plus a couple of trailers I don't care! If it looks this good with the cast it's got I'm going to try to make this one of the few films I'll see at the cinema this year.

The hot looking new film in NA is called Winter's Bone, a kind of country Noir about dope, inbreeding etc. in the Ozarks. Sounds fantastic but hasn't made it out here yet.

After being more than sceptical after hearing about a TRON remake/sequel (its a sequel, but is wasn't that clear in the early days) quite a while back, i've more than warmed to the idea now. In fact I can't wait for the release of TRON: Legacy!

Here's the trailer for Winter's Bone, one of the most talked about and highly praised movies of the year. It opens here Friday and I will catch it Friday or Saturday. Part thriller, part depiction of life in inbred, hillbilly America. The trailer will give you the basic plot hook. The 17-year-old girl star is supposed to be terrific. Might take a while to get to the UK. You might recognize John Hawkes, who plays the girl's skanky looking uncle, from Deadwood.

I really wasn't sure about it either, and said as much on here, but that trailer does make it look pretty decent. Good effects to make the old lead look young again, if that's what it was.

Saw the animated 'Up' last night. Visually stunning at times and a heart warming/heart breaking story. V good!

Try and avoid watching it in front of other people though, as no-one wants to see a grown man cry. (and thats just the 1st 20 minutes! )

Winter's Bone is the best new American film I have seen in a very long time. There are no superheroes, shoot-em-ups or car chases, but it is a thought-provoking thriller set in the inbred, hardscrabble world of the Missouri Ozarks. Mark down the name of Jennifer Lawrence, as this American actor turns in the performance of the year as a quietly determined, tough-as-nails teenager, Ree Dolly, who will stop at nothing to save her family. For those who don't know, the Ozarks are the poorest, least educated and crudest place in white America. The original home of American moonshine, and now where cooking metamphetamine pays the bills and bluegrass pickin' provides the entertainment. The local folks, all of whom are apparently related to each other in some form, are incredibly violent and hostile to strangers and relatives alike. Asking questions is "a real good way to get et up by hogs," as one woman puts it. Ree's relentless and epic quest to find her missing father, so that the family home and land won't be forfeited when his trial for meth cooking is scheduled to begin, is inspiring, mysterious and frightening. This movie asks you to figure a fair bit out for yourself but it is more than worth the trouble. I don't know when it will make it to the UK, but I think it is terrific. Others may disagree but I welcome their comments as well. I can't wait to see it again.

It's been getting rave reviews on the festival circuit but it's not something I'd personally make the trip to the cinema for, one to watch on the small screen IMO...

Saw Defiance tonight on the telly, the 2009 film about Jewish partisans surviving and protecting more than 1000 other Jews in a forest in WW2 Belarus. Thought it might be good but it turned out to be a plodding, obvious, manipulative, paint-by-numbers tale. Daniel Craig is good, as always, but there is no originality or energy despite the real life heroics being depicted. The cross cutting sequence between a traditional Jewish wedding in the forest and the slaughter of some Germans is basically a straight, and inferior, steal from the end of The Godfather. Not awful, but mediocre. IMHO.

Thanks DR. B, but I'll leave that one for you.

Sucker Punch looks like some "mash" of every genre of the last ten years

How the hell are they going to put it all together?

It looks like the Man Citeh of the film world, and will probably be worse than Showgirls (apart from the delicious Gina).
