Sick for him - and England. Whatever anyone says, with 20 mins to go, needing a win, bring Beckham on to put quality ball in. A real shame. Let's hope Rooney stays fit.

I'm waiting for someone's metatarsal to go in the penultimate week of the season.

World Cup fear for Becks
England midfielder David Beckham has torn his Achilles tendon, according to AC Milan manager Leonardo, and his hopes of playing at the World Cup would appear to be over.
The on-loan 34-year-old hobbled out of the late stages of Milan's victory over Chievo on Sunday night after pulling up when unchallenged.

I'm absolutely gutted. I feel like crying for him. That leaves Sol Campbell as the only one who can be the first Englishman to play in 4 World Cups

End of World Cup. End of career? The only thing keeping him going was the thought of going to the World Cup, surely?

It's a sad way for his England career, and perhaps his career as a whole, to end (though I wouldn't be surprised if he comes back and says he can still play a part in Brazil at 39...) Would still have been a valuable option to have from the bench and offers something none of the other right sided options do - and with Lennon now doubtful as well those options are reducing rapidly.

There is no way I would have taken him to the world cup but also no way I would have wanted this to be the reason why he missed it.

...well Aaron Lennon is struggling to make it.

The rise of Adam Johnson couldn't have come at a better time.

I think Beckham should still go with the England squad, but as a 'morale booster'. He could be the new Ken Bailey, dress him a union flag suit and top hat. Before the game he could go around the dressing room raising morale and offer Keeganesque remarks to the younger players like 'take deep breathes'.
During the game he could wander round the pitch side picking up scarves, sign autographs and stir up the England supporters.

Apparently he is "a quick healer"! The trouble now is, the talk will be "will he, won't he?" which will be of no help whatsoever. Not his fault of course, but just the way things are. I did wonder why they whisked him off so quickly.

Could be a good thing with the recent episodes regarding Terry and Cole it might stop the press looking for other stories to upset the world cup plans.

Well at least it gives the Sun newspaper a double page to print his achilles in their paper so we can all rub it at the same time

It's a media stunt. Gets him a few weeks rest, then enough games at the end of the season to make the squad......

Seen the clip from ESPN on the news. Becks has commented that he felt like somebody had kicked him, and it is really weird that on the close-up, he looks around first left then right as if to see who had actually kicked him. Spooky.

This was actually meant as a joke, shows you should be careful what you wish for.

I remember Aurelio reacting the same when he did his (Wiki shows him being out for 5 months with it by the way).

Sorry about the injury but if it means the press will report on the football rather than posh spice and her latest outfit at the W.C, then I for one am happy.
Was never going to be more than a squad player anyway.

Shall we run a sweepstake on which 'news'paper/magazine is the first to run a pictorial article entitled "Who Will Be Queen WAG?"

That surely is the key newsworthy question in the world now that 'Posh' Stick Insect and ex heir-apparent Cheryl The-Tweedy-Again are no longer going.

Myth's river- where his mother dipped him, fished him, a slippery golden boy flowed on, his name on its lips.
Without him, it was prophesised, they would not take Troy.

Women hid him, concealed him in girls' sarongs; days of sweetmeats, spices, silver songs...

But when Odysseus came, with an athlete's build, a sword and a shield, he followed him to the battlefield, the crowd's roar,

And it was sport, not war, his charmed foot on the ball...

But then his heel, his heel, his heel...
