Phil Neville might be worth a look seeing as he is likely to be playing in midfield while classed as a defender. The same could be said of Jagielka but Moyes seems to love the former, ie he will always play when fit.

Not sure if he is worth the extra million though, what do you think?

I now have 4 Everton players 8-) And only 1 GW2 absentee who might end up as a ManU player...

Baines' price makes him a certainty; why pay £1m more for someone else?

Because
1. Will play more
2. Will score more

Same reasons you would pay 7 mil for a Chelsea defender and 4mil on a Fulham defender.

Chelsea players are playing more!!? So that's why they keep outscoring the Fulham players

Oh cr*p. From now on I'll write exactly what I mean.

RE example: Chelsea defenders are better. That's why you would spend more money on 'em. I have no idea what kind of player Baines is.

He's a pretty good LB moved to a better team, likely to command a regular place when fit. He scored some powerful free kicks last year. 3 goals, 2 assists, 2 bonus, 8 yellows.

I want Baines, but will wait until I know he's fully fit. A Ferdinand is currently sitting in his spot in my draft team.

I wouldn't say he's "attack-minded" but he is comfortable going forward. Has a decent cross and a good free-kick on him.

I think Everton will struggle eventually with Europe and all that.
Their Squad is'nt big enough ,can't see many clean sheets or goals imo

baines is 4.5m because he was a wigan player! if baines was a everton player when prices we sorted out he would be 5/5.5 million, and as someone else said everton dont really have a player in his position that moyes like so when he gets in i recon he will be first choice most of the season!
yobo is 5.5m lescott is 6m all in the same defence, and whos saying baines wont pop up with a couple of goals and assists this season?
so really we are buying a defender whos real worth now is 5/5.5m for 4.5m its like free money :D

(edit)
just read my other post and realised i never made it clear that the 5.5 and 6m players i was talking about were lescott and yobo

Like Wayne Bridge was initially listed as a Fulham defender - 4.5M what an early season bargain he was!

Report just been on SSN suggesting that Baines is aiming to be fit for the Blackburn game which is in GW4.

I would have considered having him as a non playing sub for 1 GW to save having to use a transfer to bring him in, however 4 GWs is just too long to wait.

Im struggling to find another player costing £4.5m which will give a decent return in the first 4 GWs, a bit of squad restructuring may be in order

:(

Am struggling with the same problem. Team was set up perfectly with strong 5 man defence including Baines and a solid rest of team.

I see no 4.5m defender I'd be happy playing for weeks 1-4 so might have to change the team a fair bit to free up another million. At 5.5m I could have Dunne (MC) or (hopefully misclassed) Neville (EV) to fill in there till Baines starts playing. I'd go for Samba except he misses GW 2. No one else for 4.5-5.5m catches the eye

Most annoying...

Hmmm... I think I'll still bury him on the bench for a few games as the rest of my team are fit and playing, so no massive risk.

I don't want to go get some shitto in to replace him, only to then have to transfer him back in after two weeks...

Well I've decided to bump Berbatov down to Anelka to free up an extra mil (will get Tevez in once playing), this allows me to have a strong backline of:

Ben Haim, A Cole, Ferdinand, Evra, Finan

Will drop one of those (probably Ben Haim) when Baines is in and free up a bit of cash for elsewhere.

They have easy opening games.

I will drop Ferdinand for another Liverpool defender or Samba of Blackburn once they are past GW 2 and playing well.

Speaking as a United fan, you're half right. vs. Reading & @ Portsmouth should be good for the attacking 80% of the team, but defensively I think both opponents will score. Each scored 2 in the corresponding fixtures last season.

You might be right, but with 3 chelsea players already in and Liverpool and many other teams not playing in GW2 I can't think of a better alternative.

I think Evra will be good this season even if he doesn't keep many clean sheets, he had one of the highest points per game of any defender last season and he should play when fit this time.

If you can think of someone better than Ferdinand that will play the first 2-4 games let me know.
