Anyone 'read' audiobooks?

Thinking of taking a trial with Audible to get a free audiobook, which I may then carry on if any good. The idea is that I can llisten to it whilst on the turbo trainer instead of music.

Anyone got any experience of audible, audiobooks in general or any specific good ones to try?

Cheers

With Audible some unabridged books cost 2 credits and you only get 1 free one. I got the Hitchhikers Guide 1st radio series (the 'books' I wanted were 2 credits) so not sure that counts! I hate the idea of abridged texts.

Also got 2 free ones from elsewhere but still haven't listed to them. At the gym and in the car I prefer music but keep thinking I'll listen to the books on long journeys. One day.....

I listened to the Harry Potter books last year, narrated by Stephen Fry who was brilliant.

Cheers,

Murf - most if not all now seem to be 1 credit. Even the 56 hour unabridged Ulysses is only 1 credit so maybe they've changed the system.

Liking the look of the Wind up Bird Chronicle, A Prayer for Owen Meany, catch 22, Lolita, a short history of nearly everything or maybe even Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.

Probably plumple for Wind up or Meany.

Does that mean that all of Meany's line will be shouted.

Could be a tricky listen!

I've "read" loads of Audiobooks, spend at least an hour and a half driving each day and the radio is generally shite!

you "get into" them pretty quickly, the first few of The hitch-hikers guide I read were narrated by Stephen Fry who was excellent, I downloaded some of the new stuff and it was yer man from the the film (and The Office) that narrated the new ones, initially I didn't think it would be as good but "got into" it quickly enough.

I don't like the abridged ones, and I don't like the ones where you have various actors playing the characters, it's more like a play....

I'll check and see what I've still got on my pc.

I'D FORGOTTEN THAT OWEN SPEAKS LIKE THIS!! Yeah - could be interesting, although at least I'd be able to hear it over the turbo.

Have been thinking of re-reading some Irving for a while - so thought it would be a good way of combining doing that with fitting in some extra training hours. Can't decide between that or the Wind up Bird. Fancy H2G2 as well but the Fry ones are abridged I think.

It's a good way of doing it as they are generally expensive to buy - and how many times would you listen to the same one?

Personally I find them hard to absorb properly unless I know the story already. I prefer humour in the car and can thoroughly recommend The Wit of Cricket. Even if it's not your thing, Johnners, Blowers and Bird are good value. Priceless if you enjoy the game! :D

I have been put off slightly by the cost and the fact that I like listening to music at the gym. On the commute I listen to music and read - not sure I could manage an audio book whilst reading!

Also I found the range of podcasts very wide which break up the music a bit - normally store these up for holidays - for some reason.

I was a member of audible for a while and was generally a pretty happy customer. One annoying thing they used to do was to extinguish your credits if you didn't use them in a month (so you ended up paying money for nothing) but you can carry them forward now I think.

I cancelled the subscription quite recently as my circumstances changed (no more commuting :D ) so I wasn't really listening to them. The cancellation process was very quick and easy.

Always listening to the books but decided against joining audible in the end as it didnt quite stack up. I instead get the clearance audios from the library at silly prices then flog on ebay after listening.

I have a few att eh moment if we wanted to start our own little club then it would eb the cost of postage or could hand delivery if local I am in Bucks).

PM me if interested.

I listened to all the Harry Potters on audio (Ran New York marathon lsitening to the first one!)

If you sign up for audiobooks (audible.co.uk) for 12 months, cost is £7.99 x 12 = £95.88 but Amazon is offering a £50 discount off a new (see below) product from Amazon.

I was thinking of getting the ipod touch already £26 cheaper than everywhere else.

So the real cost of audibooks will be £45.88 or £3.82 per month for a year.

You can I believe you can choose from a number of selected devices at Amazon and get £50 off of it.
