Looking for a week in the sun in Jan. Tenerife prob best chance of getting some shirt off weather on the cheap. All the offers - say £250 including flights seem to be in the resort of Puerto de la Cruz. I'd probably rather have Playa de las americas or Los Cristianos if I had a choice, but a week in the sun for £250 is what it is. (Malta was £88  - but unlikely to be over 60 degrees.

Just wondered if anyone had ever been to Puerto de la Cruz & what you thought of it.

Is university part of the Island and you'll find a lot less tourists and lot more Spanish folk going about their business. So there are bars and restuarants for the locals rather than for us Brits abroad. I've not stayed there but i've been there and its fine. Oratava (old town) is also well worth a visit inland.

The key is to get a car: its cheap and it opens up loads of options. If you have a car then you can get anywhere easily.

You can go up to Mount Teide from there (dont miss) and along the North coast which is greener, wilder and more cliffy than the south of the island. The weather there is a little cooler and a little more cloudy/rainy than the south but it is relative.

I have been to Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife. Agree with a lot of what Groomyd says about it. It is a university town, so a lot more Spanishfied. It is also cloudier and cooler then the main resorts. I went in March and the weather was a bit hit and miss, when it was sunny it was warm, but when the clouds come over ( which seems to be every couple of days) it gets cool. There seems to be a lot more germans there and older people as tourists, not really a place for youngsters. There is some good walking in the nearby areas and Teide is nearby, but you will need a car. There is a decent bus service though that can get you around to other areas like Oratava or Loro Parque. Puerto de la Cruz is a nicer place then Las Americas or Los Christianos, but cooler and not really geared for teenagers.

This. The island is known to have two sides for weather PdlC is on the bad side which is why the tourist dollar flocks to the other side and created the big resorts there.

Fuertaventura is always a place that seems to be cheap, not sure why, never been though.

Thanks for the info guys, I think I'd probably enjoy the Spanishified nature of it, but I'm really looking for some heat so will have to take your advice about the south side of the Island & look there.

Not booking anything yet after the car blew a water hose and bled all its coolant out yesterday :x bigger job to fix than I realised.
