I see you all have an interest in strategy games / board games so I've set up a few 'passworded' games on www.spielbyweb.com. Feel free to come along and play. Games are played at your own pace and generally last a month or two depending on how often you check in and play.

We may have some sort of 'Championship series' if we can get enough numbers. These games are 'pre-season friendlies' Feel free to join in as many or as few as you like.

Good luck,
Adrian (The Friendly Golfer/AKNel1)

This describes them better than me, full rules are also on the site.

Surprised & Fancy Dan up to the challenge so far - any more for any more.

Which one is everyone signing up for?

You can play as many or as few as you like, Hoity Toity looks the most popular so far - game format is basically advanced 'Rock, Paper, Scissors'. Try them all though, see which you like best.

I'll have a go:

Hoity Toity - as AKNel said, basiically rock, paper, scissors on steroids - you base what cards you play on what cards you think your opponent is going to play. There's a loose theme about building up and displaying antique collections, but it is fun, honestly.

Hacienda - not sure how to describe this, it's maybe vaguely like Settlers, it's essentially about making the best use of the map to build territories and bring animals to markets to make money, allowing you to build more territories etc.

Santiago - fairly straightforward bidding game, you build up crop areas with other players and try to get the most yield markers in the largest crops. You have to collaborate to an extent while always looking out for your own interests.

Wallenstein - fairly light wargame, a bit like Risk but a bit more complicated - you have a limited set of actions that you can take on the provinces that you have, and you have to choose which actions to do on which province before you know what your opponents are going to do. Turns are then taken simultaneously. Takes a bit of getting into, but can be a lot of fun.

Tikal - a game of exploration, a new area is revealed each turn, you then have action points to move pieces around and excavate temples further for more points. Again, it's about area control, getting your men in the best places to maximise points without stretching yourself too thin.

Bus - no idea, I looked at the rules once and gave up! I've signed up for this one though, maybe we can all work it out together :? .

I'd encourage everyone to give it a go, I'm a bit of a boardgame geek so have been on the site for a while, it can be fun although the turn-based approach, with games lasting weeks or even months, is not for everyone.

Nice idea AKNel1.

I am really interested in principle but I don't know how to play any of these games and at the moment I too busy training for the Settlers World Championships to dedicate any time to learning them.

Just to clarify, the games are played in a 'play by mail' format, so you don't have to commit to several hours of game play at anyone time.

Just check in as and when it suits you (most people take a look once or twice a day) and take your turns when its your go. Most times it will take up 5 minutes of your day - unless you are playing lots of games.

Pretty much everyone playing so far are SpielbyWeb virgins or have limited experience of the games. Therefore expect Fancy Dan (SBW id: Domster) to win most of the games.

As soon as each game reaches its maximum number they will start automatically. Most are simple to learn, but more complex to master.

Come and have a go, if you think your hard enough.... :P

I'm playing 2 games but not sure which.
It is safe to say I have no idea of how to play, the rules or strategy.
I had to build a canal in one but it wouldn't let me so I had to pass my go. :)

Thats Santiago, you need to select an area on the board where you would like to build a canal (it has to be connected to previous canals), or you can choose to pass - after that there is a round of bidding when everyone has put their bids in the 'Canal overseer' gets to choose which canal is 'built'

I'm guessing you were trying to build a canal that wasn't linked to the current canal.

If anyone is unsure of what they should be doing at any stage, or the game does not appear to be letting them do what they want to do. Just ask on this thread, as there is no rush to take your turn you can wait for a response before making your move.

As far as strategies go  I'm still trying to get my first win in any game - I suspect Fancy Dan may be of more help there.

An email arrives saying it is my turn and gives a link.
I press the link and see a game where I need to do something.

I've set up all of the above (see start of thread) as FISO Passworded games. You can set up your own games (with or without passwords) or join any open games that are looking for players if you want to get a 'feel' for each game.
