My first car was similar to that Escort, R reg - about 75-76?? except mine had a godawful paler brown 'dogsh!t' coloured roof that folded back like a dodgy tim of sardines. Only had 44,000 on the clock when I got it but it took me just 2 years to run it into the ground, finally expiring outside Central Park a week after I agreed a trade in price (the proper one that is now Wigan Tesco not the New York imitation). The garage then only gave me £50 rather than £100 as I delivered it to them on a toe rope.....

I had one cos my parents had one when I was a kid. The Vinyl roof was an optional extra so think yourself lucky  . Nice smooth gear change, and the engine was pretty good for its day, 1.3 or 1.6 Murf?

No way I'm going to remember them all or get the right order but I'll try :-) Dates are a very rough guess as I went through a few quite quickly for various reasons. Also the periods where I owned 2 or more at the same time confuse the issue.

1980 - Triumph Herald Estate 13/60 - definitely first car, engine seized
1981 - Ford Cortina 1600 - did a job, killed engine
1983 - Ford Cortina 2000 GLX - v nice car, got nicked so bought the next and then got it back several weeks later, sold it to a Capri owner that wanted the bigger engine
1985 - Ford Cortina 2000E - decent car, sold to another Capri owner when I got the Corsair
1987 - Ford Corsair - picked up v cheap when landlord died, comfortable drive but not exactly my type of car, given to my father in exchange for the next car
1988 - Ford Granada - can't remember which MK but not the most recent, ex-police, nice car. Father sold it whilst I was out one evening to pay his gambling debts
1992 - no car for a couple of years
1994 - Ford Escort 1300 - hated it
1995 - Ford Capri 2.8i - enjoyed driving it but wanted a Granada, sold
1997 - Ford Granada 2.8i - nice car, had gear box problems and problems getting a replacement, mothballed for a few months
1999 - Rover 2600S - quite enjoyed the change, but it was only a cheap temporary but, killed gearbox whilst picking up a gb for the Granada
1999 - Hillman of some sort, bought to get me home with Granada gearbox and cover a few days until fixed, complete piece of shit!
2000 - Ford Granada 2.8i - still had the other that was now having engine problems, idea was to make one decent car from the 2, never happened, ended up selling them both to someone with the same idea.
I feel certain that there was something else in here with both Granadas off the road and before I bought the next one, it might come back to me.
2001 - Ford Granada 2.0 - most reliable car I've ever owned, moved to Finland in it, it survived 3 winters there with no problems at all, too much hassle trying to re-register in the UK when I returned. Scrapped.
2006 - Renault Safrane - nice car, shame about the engine design fault! Engine seized.
2007 - Vauxhall Astra - like driving a brick! Engine seized after 4 or 5 months.
2007 - Rover 400 series (can't remember which) - did a job, bodywork falling apart, wanted a Ford.
2009 - Ford Mondeo - current, first diesel, going well at present

me too! Still my favourite ever car, you can keep your Lambos and your top gear dream motors, give me an early 1300 with the chrome bumpers (like the one attached) and some sunshine on a blast down some English country roads and I'm happy!

I've loved all my cars, except the Peugeot 104 XSi which was the biggest pile of crap ever - so tinny , uncomfortable and brittle ...

1st Car:
Vauxhall Cavalier 1600GL Mk1 (Beige with brown trim )

Boy racer years:
Ford Fiesta XR2 Mk1 (Black) :D :D - Loved this car to bits, sold for same price 3 yrs later; it was kept so clean. A close second favourite to the Mini I owned later.
Toyota Corolla GT Coupe 1600 (Black) - Well built and felt much more solid than current Toyota's.
Ford Capri Mk3 1600GL (Red) - Great cars but always wanted the 2.8i.

Family man + runaround years:
Ford Granada 2.0GL Mk3 (White) - Will never have another white car but had so much space for prams etc...
Peugeot 104 1.4XSi (Blue) - Hated the speed humps, forever breaking suspension parts
Triumph Stag 1977 :D (Black before full restoration then Maroon) - Just beautiful but not a practical family car
2000 Mini Cooper :D :D :D - (Red, Silver Stripes) - Last of the real minis and my favourite in the list here.
Mercedes 200TE (Bronze/Brown) - What a beauty, comfortable as a sofa.

Current vehicles:
95' Suzuki Vitara 2.0 V6 (Teal Blue) - Great for the muddy lanes and tracks where I worked and live but now dead as needs a new timing chain at £1600, so heading for the scrap heap now.
95' VW Transporter 2.4D - Great for transporting all the kit for my son's band.

Never owned a car - always had Company Cars. Never had to pay for insurance :D

Orion 1.4 (and a bootful of tampons! I used to work for a feminine hygeine product manufacturer and it was a handmedown from a Nurse Lecturer)
Astra 1.4 (another handmedown. I was promised a new car so I never washed it. When it went back there was moss growing in the hatch)
Rover 620 Si (black. Absolutley beautiful with a proper carphone. Luverly)
Rover 620SLi
Mazda 323
BMW 323
Rover 75 (Connoisseur. Beautiful with lots of toys. Only one thing wrong with it. The sensor on the intake used to get clogged up in wet weather and cut the engine out. One minute you're doing 80 ther next nowt.)
X Type Jag (Best car I've ever had, tho BroJtr prefers...)
Saab 9-3. (Easy to drive, some nice toys but heavy on the list price)

Vauxhall Astra (C Reg) - £450
Image
Doors on the opposite side to mine didnt open.
Had it for about 3 years and I think I got £250 back for it :)
Did loads of my own repairs on it.... from oil changes, to replacing the starter motor.... even filling in holes in the body work!!!!

Vauxhall Cavalier (G Reg) - 2.0 GLI (or something like that).
Compared to my 1.2 Astra, it was like a flying machine. I thought i was the dogs do dars when I got this. Had electric windows (front and rear), a sun roof (check me out) and even electric wing mirrors. You cant buy class.

Image Althought this is an SRI... it looks very like mine (mine didnt have the colour coded wing mirrors).

Ford Escort 16v Si (M Reg)
Very tidy and my newest motor (at the time). Had it for a while and couldnt fault it to be honest.
Image
Fairly similar to mine, but min had better wheels

Golf GTi TDi (51 plate)
Always wanted a Golf, could never quite afford one. Finally got one. Great car (especially for lots of motorway miles). Could shift a bit for a diesel as well.
Image

BMW 120 M Sport (Diesel :( )
Although happy with the car, perhaps not the comfiest for doing lots of mileage (I do about 25-30k a year).
Image

Mines an older one (55 plate).... but they havent changed that much

My first escort was a right heap, had to keep jump leads in the back as constantly didn't start in the cold, all the central locking packed up soon after I got it so could never lock the car.

The electric windows ( only on the front windows ) didn't work so when I came to carparks etc I had to open the door and reach for the ticket machine - what a nightmare. Also was a nightmare in the summer - I had to undo the back windows

1.3. Rubbish but solid car but in a way quite fun to drive.

Second car was a red astra, bit like Zimm's but a 2.0 GTE. A nice upgrade into boyracerville as soon as I started getting a proper wage.

Last seen in a ditch....

Only put 2 vehicles in a ditch, Peugeot 206 had a blow out on an icy back road in Finland, almost rescued the slide but ran out of road due to a bend. Reversed a lorry into one, long grass, thought it was solid ground, should have got out to look first

Never put anything in a ditch (touch wood) but that X1/9 I had was reversed into twice (gently luckily) within 2 minutes in a national trust car park.

BMW X5 owners just don't look behind them - she reversed into my side, while a toyota reversed into the front! The perils of a low car.

Isnt that how everyone ends up in a ditch? i.e. running out of road?
Surely the trick to "rescuing it" is making sure you factor enough tarmac into the equation?

When I stuck mine in the ditch I was feeling temporarily chuffed at having straightened out my slide. Shame I was pointing 60 degrees to the left and ditchbound. Not much road to run out of when at that sort of angle.
