You guys sure can beat a dead horse to death.

But fwiw - thanks for the 9/11 moment of silence prior to your footy matches, you guys do this very well.

I think you'd be hard pressed to ever find a public event where we can hold a moment of silence for anything more than an actual moment (much like this thread).

It doesn't, specifically, but that was more the aim, as I posted above and then Spencer re-quoted because he could see things were getting a little bit heated. Yes, I tried to sum up the last ten years since 9/11 in my opening titbit ; it may be slightly provocative as you say Dan but it was just my wording. I tried to be as unbiased as possible. I'm all for some good debate, however and Steph has kindly set up a separate thread with this in mind.

Fair enough - perhaps the thread title should be changed to make this clear, and the controversial posts moved to the other thread?

I have absolutely no problem with someone moving the supposedly controversial posts off this thread to the other one although since it is now 9-15 I don't really see the point. This is a fantasy football site with a News & Politics section and a 9-11 thread, not a commemorative plague stained by graffiti, but if moving it will make some people happier, go right ahead.

I had no plans to return to this thread after accepting the request to leave it entirely for expressions of condolence for the innocent victims of 9-11 and their loved ones, even though I continue to believe that there is no disrespect in discussing the causes and consequences of that terrible day on the same thread. Then I read Glenn Greenwald's excellent column about the controversy surrounding Paul Krugman's 10th anniversary blog comments and the hypocrites of the American Right demanding sole control of the partisan political exploitation of 9-11 and thought it was well worth sharing. I considered putting it on the other thread but concluded that it belonged on this one because it goes directly to the issue that was being debated on here. I assumed that two days after 9-11 no rational person would mind and that complaints would be limited to Tclist.

I do not question the good intentions of almost all the posters who wanted an exclusive RIP thread, which is why, although unconvinced by their arguments, I acceded to their wishes. Bluenosey started this thread and later specified he would like it to be devoted exclusively to commemorating the innocent people who were cruelly murdered that day and out of respect for him I accepted. If I have any further comments to make on the subject I will post them on the other thread. I feel compelled to respond to Tclist's latest bizarre comparison, however. His confession that he resisted the temptation to ''savage'' Michael Foot (whoever that is) on his FISO RIP thread was intended as a swipe at a few of us. He clearly meant to suggest the criticisms posted on this thread of American foreign policy and its connection to 9-11 are somehow equivalent to ''savaging'' the innocent victims from that day, as if we were suggesting they were responsible for those foreign policy actions before or after 9-11, which is patently ridiculous. That is why we call them ''innocent'' victims and their murder an act of terrorism. I saw NO comments that spoke of those victims disrespectfully in any way, let alone any that ''savaged'' them. I will leave it at that.

Michael Foot was Labour's leader in the dark days of Militant, the SDP and the brilliant skit of Call My Bluff where three Labour MP's (being impersonated) gave three different definitions of Nuclear Disarmament.

Respected biographer and historian, but not cut out for leading Labour. (I think he was a compromise candidate, and was supposed to bring the left into the fold, or keep them quite etc......)

I just found out that there are 4 men trapped down a coal mine in Wales. This is very worrying and I am genuinely concerned for their safety.

Now... according to the two biggest middle class guilt members of FISO I should do one of 2 things... or maybe both at once.

A) I don't know them so why should I even mention it on here or feel worried for their safety. It's just a platitude so I'm being a bit silly.

or

B) I should put all of this in context. There were 33 miners trapped in Chile so surely that is so much more important in the grand scheme of things because there was a lot more of them trapped.

Hmmm

I think I'm going to ignore all this clap trap and carry on.

But they are probably 4 husbands/fathers/sons.

So which category does that put you in with regards to concerns for their loved one!? :(

Or C) Use them as an excuse to have a pop at a few posters on FISO. Well done, sir.

You missed out the fact that he allowed/gave Trade Unions that were already dragging the country down the toilet even more power in the 70's.

RIP threads are meant to be respectful surely?

If you have nothing good to say about the person/event, say nothing.

Meanwhile, you moan about RIP threads being hijacked while reopening arguments that had long since died on this one - not sure what that says about your mentality :?

Maybe someone who really wanted these threads to remain respectful would have preferred to let sleeping dogs lie?
