I agree with you Dan entirely. London is so different to the rest of country.

Its vital to disctinguish between ethnicity and nationality.

Nationality is what is on your passport. It can change. If i move to another country i can change my nationality, represent that country at sports, vote in the elections etc etc

Ethnicity does not change (except across many many generations). It is your ethnic origin. Hence a black African can be as British as anyone else!

Ethnic make up if you go back far enough is likely to be diverse and will show movements around the globe of your familly line, or invasions that have occured to your land without you moving.

I can see pure DNA as being the next middle class thing to have. :) . 'Jacasta is 76% Euroasian and 12% Middle Eastderb but we are undecided to have some north Caucases next year or a new Land Rover. :D

To find out more about Englishness and to have a few good laughs as well, I strongly recommend "Watching the English, the Hidden Rules of English Behavior" by anthropologist Kate Fox. A very insightful and amusing book, that I have been plowing through the past few days.
Pakastani immigrants or gypsies, even Yanks, can be just as English as fifteenth generation English, IF they figure out the rules and rituals and follow them.

I've picked that book up in shops a few times and felt tempted to get it, now I might (though don't know when I'll get the chance to read it).

And nor are 'the immigrants'.

Some are of course, but the non-Daily Mail reality is that the vast majority of immigrants want to come here to make a life and to work hard.

Just like your familly did if you go back far enough.

an irish welsh or scottish person whose ancestor had the sense to come to the promised land

and before some muppet starts chanting racist my grandparrents are from wales and go back another generation and they are all from ireland

a point i am proud of

i just think you need to be able to laugh at yourself if you enjoy dishing it out

What about chuck anybody commits crime out? What is the difference between immigrant and you.
I always think that the british passport they gave me a micky mouse passport.Nobody ever will look at me as British.I'm immigrant and I will always stay as immigrant.
But funny thing is I have been in this country almost 20 years and that makes me I have more British experiences than most of the British teenagers :)
I don't even know why you bothering to give me a passport, you can always give me a simple residency papers. :?

The problem is not the immigrants

Its the racism that the host country greets them with :(

I think you're over generalising here, apparently this problem doesn't exist in London although it is prevalent among Cardiff taxi drivers.

Yes of course. Plenty of racism here in London.

However.............. I like the fact that my daughter at the age of three has Asian friends and goes to their houses and sees different things, that her child minder is Pakistani and her class at school has children from most ethnic groups.

Best of all is that they all play and fall out without ever mentioning the way each other looks!!! The other day she was talking about a kid at school who i did not know and told me that i did know him cos he was the one who was always late, stole other people's toys but was good at painting........................failed to mention he was black!!!! How great is that?

Leeds is like that - my kids' school is very multi-cultural - racism does rear its head there very occasionally so although it's not an issue at 3 it does get to be an issue (albeit very minor and in a 'learned behaviour' way) by the age of 10.

The majority of kids at the local Secondary school are from Asian or Afro-Caribbean backgrounds - it will be interesting for them to go to a school where they are in the minority.

Plenty of Tarquils and Tollomys at the school as well!

It is Wimbledon after all!!!

Where i live is fascinating: go out of my house, turn left and walk quarter of a mile to Earlsfield Station and the people out and about are very multi-race. Poster ads are for hip-hop, rap and black artists as well as products aimed at the black and Asian markets (plus Sky and T-mobile,a dn Abbey and all the usual). Turn left and walk up to Southfield Tube (1 mile) the only non-white people you see are working in Indian restaurants!!!

I exaggerate of course. But not much!

Well I have the Jewish area of Leeds to throw into the multi-cultural mix! In fact within a radius of 1 mile from my house (approx) there are (and these are only the ones I can think of off the top of my head)

4 synagogues
3 mosques
1 Sikh Temple
1 Hindu Temple
about 10 Churches
