    Mertesacker's equaliser comes pretty close.

We will now never know if Wenger would of left Arsenal at the end of the season, if his team had lost yesterday's semi-final. He still could, of course.

Arsenal are clear favourites but the first word in my mind when I saw this line-up - beatable.
First thought in my mind was they'll be losing when Giroud comes on to sort it all out.

I think a fodda -> DGW fodda 4ph would be my move if I was down to 10 if Terry was injured, certainly if I had only one Chelsea defender anyway.

If I had two Chelsea defs and was happy with my fodda (say a Hull def for the GW37 double) I'd actually be tempted to take a hit and go for an Arsenal defender for their run of

    West Ham (H)
    Hull City (A)
    Newcastle (H)
    West Brom (H)
    Norwich (A).

I'd certainly stick with a 'premium' defender rather than weaken the defense if I was getting rid of Terry, but again, I do think fodda -> Palace fodda would likely be the best route (Villa might actually be a good shout given they have a decent game this week and a double in GW37 too).

That's not a bad idea actually - save 0.2, get in Mertesacker's goal threat and decent fixture and hope. The savings might even allow me to upgrade AJ to Ramsey too :?

Almost 2/3rds going for Lukaku. Interesting.

Spent a lot of time foraging up around the right wing yesterday, and has scored a grand total of 4 points from 180 minutes against these two opponents so far this season.

I'm not saying its not without merit, but is it such a slam dunk?

Thats the first time he's ever played there, at least for Everton, not sure about anyone else. Was a tactical decision to play him up against Monreal instead of Mertesacker. This allowed Naismith to play up front on his own who dropped deeper and dragged the Arsenal centrebacks out, which in turn allowed Mirallas and Baines to get behind the fullbacks and Lukaku run infield from the right on his favoured left foot. And generally cause havoc in the Arsenal defence which worked.

  • Re: Premiership team of the season
    02 Apr 2014, 7:47

My team of the season would be this:

Cech - least goals conceded in the league
Ivanovic - many clean sheets this season, also good attacking wise
Coleman - many goals for a right back this season
Mertesacker - without those few losses where Arsenal conceded big, they actually had a really good defence and I think it wouldn't be as good without the big German
Hazard - really important player for Chelsea this season
Silva - Actually might be someone else here as Silva did not play for some time, but when he does I think he is what keeps the Man City creative going - also he has 6 goals and 8 assists which is quite a good statistic.
Yaya Toure - the best midfielder in this season in my opinion
Gerrard - plenty of assists and goals this year and in my opinion what keeps the team chemistry together
Rooney - while United might be having a bad season, I think without Rooney it would be much worse
    Suarez - no questions here
Sturridge - 2nd leading goalscorer and he did skip some games too just as Suarez.

    Subs:
Boruc - I think without him the season would've started as good at it did for Southampton
Jay Rodriguez - plenty of goals, which helped Southampton to get into top 10
Baines - while I think this season might not be as good as Baines' have had some years ago, he definately is what keeps Everton's defence together and also has helped out with some goals. Would like to see more assists from him though
Lallana - I think he has become really better since last year and has a high potential for the future too

  • Re: RMT - Need advice!

I'd start with the question many of us are asking - should Aguero be fit in GW34, would you bring him in for Sturridge or for Lukaku?

After you've decided that one, then you can think about moves to get there in three transfers. I think I'd start by calculating how much spare cash I had (after the Aguero decision is made) and then look at Sterling out for someone. With a potentially injured Collins, it looks to me as though you'll be forced to play either a (likely) benched Sterling or Jedinak, which is not choice at all really.

My own front seven is very similar, although I have Adam Johnson in for Sterling. You could probably invest in Gerrard (although I think I'd avoid that for now as I think the time for that was over the last couple of weeks) or as you say switching Jedinek for Mutch but this is a bit of a sideways move and I think I'd concentrate on getting some of that bank money out on the pitch.

I do also think that swapping out Mertesacker is a good idea, but doing it for a hit is probably not worth it. Chelsea defenders are the obvious candidates to bring in, although you could also consider doubling up on Everton's defence with GW34 in mind.

  • RMT - Need advice!
    27 Mar 2014, 21:45

I'm top in an important mini-league. I really need some advice on what to do here.

I have a tonne in the bank, so I have a few different options. Here's what I'm toying between:

    Mertesacker  Azpilicueta
    Fonte  Azpilicueta
    Collins  Azpilicueta

    Jedinak  Mutch (Choo choo!)

I can absorb hits on Mertesacker and Sterling. I want to keep the option of doing Lukaku  Agüero if and when.

    Any thoughts hugely appreciated!

Hi all...just after a little help...I am 2nd in my 42 team mini league 55 points off top...and after a little advice as of what to do next??

    My team is:

    Boruc £1.5m
    Vertonghen £5.5m
    Cahill £4.5m
    Williams £3.5m
    Chico £2.5m
    Hazard £6.5m
    Toure £6.0m
    Barkley £1.5m
    Giroud £4.0m
    Rooney £7.0m
    Suarez £7.5m

Top Team (a friend) will probably be as follows after the window:

    Boruc
    Mertesacker
    Cahill
    Fonte
    Sagna
    Hazard
    Toure
    Silva
    Suarez
    Sturridge
    Giroud

Couple of options I have come up with maybe or please add your own options?

    Out: Vertonghen/Chico/Williams In: Terry/Davies/Mertesacker

    Out: Giroud/Barkley/Williams In: Sturridge/Lallana/Davies

    Out: Vertonghen/Williams/Giroud In:Aguero/Terry/Davies

    Thanks in advance

Ozil? Suarez bid? Statements about cash available?

I think Wenger is too set it in his ways following relative success (if not trophies) in the years of supposed austerity at the club and can't adapt to the new scenario of 'speculate to accumulate' meaning squad not stadium. The whole point of investing in the new stadium is lost if you just hoard your money like Ken Dodd. Will be doubly so if they miss out on the Wenger Cup, their raison d'etre.

This article sums up the situation quite nicely.

I would like to clarify something that came up in a recent blog concerning the Emirates Stadium debt. There are a few fans on this site who believe that the stadium debt is what has been hindering Arsenal from buying world class, quality players. This is not true, and I will explain below. Please read carefully because those of us who actually do know the facts would hate to have to post this over and over again.

The total debt of the construction of the Emirates Stadium is roughly 500 million pounds including add-ons. Arsenal signed an agreement to pay off this debt over a long term, roughly being 20-25m per annum. If this agreement was circumvented in any way, it would incur major penalties, a risk Arsenal were not willing to take and haven’t. Therefore, the target date for the completion of paying it off is around the year 2031. Initially, through investments from companies like the Granada Media Group buying a stake worth 47million (5% shares) at the time, on top of Arsenal making a profit from selling our best players AT THE TIME (Overmars, Petit) we were able to go ahead with the construction. Arsenal secured a £260 million loan from a group of banks led by the Royal Bank of Scotland in April 2003. The cost of building the stadium had risen by 100m pounds during that period, forcing them to issue a bond scheme online via the website which raised several million, courtesy of the fans.

Through various endorsement deals from Nike and others, Arsenal were able to continue the construction of the stadium, pay off the annual debt, and still generate a profit. The continual hiking of ticket prices and player sales made this a possibility. It is public knowledge that this accumulated profit has amounted to 70-80m up until now. For the past few years, Arsenal has been making a profit. In 2010, Highbury Square had been fully paid off and began generating profit. Emirates and Puma have signed some really lucrative deals with Arsenal accumulating to 320m pounds.

Ladies and gentlemen, contrary to what you have believed about the stadium debt, Arsenal have been in a good position to buy world class players over the last 2 or 3 years. Instead of buying 2 or 3 top players every year, which would have bolstered our squad tremendously, given us a good chance to win silverware, given our existing world class players a reason to stay (RVP, Fabregas), increase fan support and ultimately make even more revenue, Arsene decided to go the cheaper route by buying 6 or 7 cheap players most of whom have ended up as deadwood, all the while sucking the life out of the wage bill and generally having little or no contribution to our club.

We had to get RAPED by Man United 8-2 in order for Wenger to make some sub par signings 2 seasons ago. Those signings included Arteta, Mertesacker, Gervinho, Park and Santos. Let’s be honest, Arteta is the only one of those worth 2 bob. People can argue about Mertesacker, but in my opinion he is too slow and only looks good when Koscielny is playing beside him. (Look what a 35 year old Drogba did a few days ago). Basically we have had 4 players earning roughly 60-70k a week for 2 years who were written off as deadwood after a couple of games. Do the math, that is a whole lot of money gone to waste. I would rather Wenger have bought Mata and Cahill/Samba for a few million more, still have them in the squad today kicking arse and winning us trophies, than have a bunch of deadwoods doing nothing but leeching off the wage bill. The same applies to Djourou, Squillaci, Diaby, Denilson, Bendtner and a whole bunch of other players who just have not come to the party. Wenger is making a massive gamble every time he buys an unknown player, especially now that we have sugar daddy clubs on the rise.

We have a saying in my home country ‘Goedkoop is duurkoop.’ Meaning – YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. 9/10 times, when you buy a big name, you get results. When buying unproven, cheap players the gamble is massive, and in our case, if they do end up becoming the next Henry, what do they do? THEY LEAVE ARSENAL, because of the very reasons I have mentioned above.

What is even more worrying, is that if Arsenal fail to sign some big names soon and challenge for some silverware, we will have to say farewell to players like Cazorla, Kossie, Wilshere etc. It is time Wenger realizes he cannot keep giving us fans and players false hopes in pretending we are strong enough to challenge for titles with our current mediocre squad. The players and us fans need some kind of reassurance that silverware, or at least ambition to win silverware, is around the corner. It is public knowledge we have 70m to spend without repercussion. Arsene, please do yourself and us fans a favour AND SPEND IT ON TOP PLAYERS NOW!!! I would hate to write this article again same time, next year.

Buy someone in the summer to replace Szczesney and Giroud and with the return of Ramsey and Walcott we'd absolutely murder teams.

    -------- Oxlade -------- Ozil -------- Walcott --------

    -------------- Ramsey -------- Flamini --------------

    Gibbs - Mertesacker - Koscielny - Sagna

SWANS SCORE AT THE DEATH! Mathieu Flamini hands Swansea an unlikely equaliser in stoppage time with a bizarre own goal. Leon Britton's run and shot hits Per Mertesacker and then goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny before bouncing off the unfortunate Frenchman for an Og! That could be curtains to Arsenal's title hope

Which trio will score more points.

Pro's and cons to all 3 selections.

Negredo and Kolarov - aren't guaranteed starters, so wont play as many games.
Aguero - injured, will he be back soon? and will he hit form again when he is?
Mertesacker and Giroud - Arsenal seem to have gone to crap recently.
Sturridge - seems the only player with no serious downside, though Liverpool do have a couple less games than the others

Rodrigues looks good but Soutampton only have 7 games left and nothing really to play for.

    My options would be:

    Negredo vs Rodrigues
    C Davies vs Mertesacker
    Terry vs Cahill

I'm keeping Giroud, been trying to get rid of him all season, and had to make transfers elsewhere but he's steadily scored every window, even though he looks poor most times I've watched him, the extra cup games just tipping it in his favour.
