Times Fantasy World Cup

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/fantasyworldcup

For more info see: http://fantasyfootballuk.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=6692

All entries must be completed before 16:59 (BST) on Friday 9th June 06, for the start of the competition when the first game kicks off in Munich, Germany. No entries will be taken after this time.

The cost of entry is £5 per team and payment can be made by credit or debit card using the secure payment system. As part of their 1966 theme, they will be giving you the chance to register 6 teams for £6.

Each entrant has a budget of £100million to select a team of eleven players and one player from the historic 1966 side that defeated Germany in the final at Wembley.

The maximum number of players from any one club is four and you must ensure that you have one '66 player. So an entrant can have four players maximum from any one country. A team consists of a goalkeeper plus a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 formation.

During the first Transfer window which opens from launch on Saturday 20th May, and runs through until Wednesday 7 June at 23:59:59, you can transfer as many players as you wish, but remember you must replace the same amount with new players. In addition, there is a maximum of FOUR players from any one country, a rule that remains applicable during the course of the competition. A team must have no more than four players from any one country at any given point in the game.

Your team must always consist of a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 formation.

1966 World Cup Player Selections

We have introduced a rather unique element to the game that allows entrants to select a player from that historic squad from 1966. Moore, Charlton, Styles or Hurst, you choose. There are 22 players to select from the world cup winning team and you must choose one.

Each '66 world cup player maintains a unique route for England to progress during the 2006 world cup finals. The challenge for you is to correctly predict which route they will take, depending upon the selected '66 player chose.

If your '66 player has the winning prediction, then you could be on the way to securing some valuable extra Fantasy World Cup points. So for example, should you choose England's captain hero of 1966, Bobby Moore, the route you would expect

England to follow would be:

England to win Group B - 5 points

Followed by

A victory over Germany in the last sixteen - 5 points

And then

Victory over Holland in the quarter finals - 10 points

Victory over the Brazilians in the semi-final - 8 points

And finally

A victory in the final over Argentina - 8 points

Total - 36 points

The 1966 player selection scoring:

Stars of '66 Scoring
Correct group stage prediction 5 points
Correct last 16 result prediction 5 points
Correct quarter final result prediction 10 points
Correct semi final result prediction 8 points
Correct final result prediction 8 points
NB: A correct prediction requires matching both the opposition team and the specified result (win or lose)

Below are reviews of Fantasy World Cup Football Games for 2002 (go here for the 2006 Fantasy World Cup games).

 Telegraph Fantasy Football World Cup

Sticking closely to the TFF domestic formula, TFF World Cup challenges you to pick an 11 man team in a 1-4-3-3 formation using a £50m budget. As per TFF there are no restrictions on the number of players per country. The consequence is that if you can load your initial team with plenty of players from the last 4 in the World Cup and use your transfers to bring in more of these players then you have a good chance of doing very well. But can you predict the last 4?

You can make up to 8 transfers to your 11 man team at any time during the game (no daily or weekly limit) but no transfers will become effective until 7:30 a.m. BST on Wednesday 5th June 2002. Take care in considering when to use your 8 transfers and which players to take out i.e. do you blow them all in the group stages or hold them back for the knock out stages (or a bit of both) and do you concentrate on changing your strikers or mix it up? A word of warning - when picking your team make sure it is the team you want because unlike many other games there are no unlimited transfers prior to game kick-off. In a slight change from TFF, you can also make changes in between matches on the same day with your new players scoring for the very next match, so this will be a 'hands on' game. Online transfers will require a weekly password published in the Telegraph every Wednesday.

Their excellent Super League facility is available and it's free although there are no Super League prizes. To join the FISO Super League just enter the Super League name  FISO CO UK  and the Super League PIN of  8000447. The usual minimum 5 participants are required in the Super League. Don't be fooled by the list of players in the Newspaper - the online list has a lot more players.

Team points will be updated every evening and Super League tables will be updated twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays. On-line applicants must have received confirmation of their application prior to 12:30pm BST on Friday 31st May 2002 in order to score points during the first scoring matches and Postal applications must be received no later than first post on Friday 31st May 2002 in order to score points during week one matches.

Entry fee & Prizes - Entry fee is £5 and £50,000 is on offer for the top-scoring manager with £2,000 for 2nd and £1,000 for 3rd.

Points Scoring System:

  • Player appearance for full match +2,
  • player appearance for part of a match only +1,
  • goal scored (including all penalties) +10,
  • golden goal scored +20 bonus points,
  • key contribution to a goal +3,
  • missed penalty (inc. shoot-outs) -5,
  • sent off -5,
  • yellow card -2 (2 yellow cards leading to a red card will count -5).
  • For defenders and goalkeepers only:
  • clean sheet (players completing full match inc. extra time) +4,
  • clean sheet (players completing part of a match only) +2,
  • goal conceded -1.

So, as you can see, there is a very heavy accent on goals scored (and all penalties are included). In the player list Damien Duff looks an obvious player to pick - classified as a midfielder and likely to play up front for the Republic of Ireland, at £3.2m he looks a steal. Premiership players that are known goal scorers and are classified as defenders include Ian Harte and Christian Ziege. Oh and don't forget that Paraguay's flamboyant goalkeeper Chilavert is banned for the first game. Penalty takers may well be important and known ones include Harte (Rep Ireland), Figo (Portugal), Del Piero (Italy), Ballack (Germany), Larsson (Sweden) & finally that man Chilavert (Paraguay).

World Cup Dream Team - The Sun

Formally launched at midnight on 15 May, World Cup Dream Team follows the principles of their Premiership Dream Team game very closely.

  • Entry deadline 12:30 p.m. BST Friday 31 May.

  • 11 man team (i.e. not a squad based game)

  • Over 360 players to choose from - 40 keepers, over 100 defenders, more than 115 midfielders and almost 110 strikers with player profile pop-ups to assist you

  • Budget - your team's value cannot exceed £50million.

  • Player Restriction - you must pick no more than two players from any one country.

  • Formation - your team must have one keeper, four defenders, three or four midfielders, and two or three forwards.

  • Entry fee - £5 per team with a '5 teams for the price of 4' offer

  • Web or phone entry and the web entry can be paid either by credit/debit card or an innovative premium rate phone call which generates a PIN for use on the web

  • End of Game Prizes -

  • Mid-game Prizes -

  • Mini-League prize - at the end of the game, the manager who set up the best performing Mini League will walk away with £2,000 to share as he or she sees fit. The prize is awarded to the Mini League with the highest average points total (total points divided by number of teams; a Mini League must have five teams minimum to qualify).

  • That's a whopping total prize pool of £100,000.

  • Transfer Window - there is a mid-game Transfer Window where you can swap up to a maximum of THREE players – and whilst you must keep to the £50million budget you no longer need keep to the original restriction of a maximum of two players from any one team, meaning you can end up with a maximum of 5 from any one country. Transfers take effect just before the last 16 matches (the knock-out stage) gets underway. The cost of online transfers will be £2.50 which can be paid either by a valid debit/credit card or by calling a special transfer payment hotline. This is a fixed charge no matter whether you do 1, 2 or 3 transfers.

PaddyPower

A free entry competition (but only one team per person) and a total prize pool of £10,000 on offer for the winners as follows:

  • The winner will receive £5,000 in free bets
  • Second to fifth place will each win £1,000 in free bets
  • Every day during the World Cup, a daily winner will receive a £50 free bet

The rules allow you a budget of 140 'stars' with which to build your squad, with players costing from as little as 1 Star, right up to 10 for the world's best players. Each player's star rating is calculated based on his own ability and his team's ability to reach the World Cup Final. Simply pick the 23 players who'll make up your squad, without breaking the budget. To keep it simple, they've restricted the choice to:

  • Three Keepers
  • Seven Defenders
  • Eight Midfielders
  • Five Strikers
Once you’ve selected your squad you cannot change it, so make sure you’re happy with the selection before you submit it.

Having chosen your squad, you'll need to pick your starting eleven. You can change the 11 team players once per day during the tournament - to ensure you've always got your best players on the pitch. Only the 11 players in your team will score points for you - so make sure you're on the ball with any team changes. To join the FISO Super League use - Name: Fans of FISO CO UK

BBC World Cup Fantasy Golden Boot

Likely to be extremely well run and very popular as entry is free (although only one entry per person). An interesting game with higher points being scored for your higher rated strikers (choose 7 in total).  One points is scored every time your striker scores a goal during normal and extra time (but not penalty shoot outs). Players are weighted from 7 down to 1 with the goals scored then being multiplied by the player rating. Unlimited transfers prior to noon 31 May so you can enter early and change your team later if you change your mind.

There are 5 game phases (all timings represent UK British Summer Time):

  • Phase 1: (first set of group matches) 12 noon Friday, 31 May 2002 to 11.59am Wednesday, 5 June 2002;

  • Phase 2: (second set of group matches) 12 noon Wednesday, 5 June 2002 to 6.59am Tuesday, 11 June 2002;

  • Phase 3: (third set of group matches) 7.00am Tuesday, 11 June 2002 to 6.59am Saturday, 15 June 2002;

  • Phase 4: (last 16 matches) 7.00am Saturday, 15 June 2002 to 6.59am Friday, 21 June 2002;

Sky's World Super Manager

The first prize is a family season ticket to any English league club of choice, with 20 runners-up getting £100 to spend in Kitbag on whatever they want.

The rules are fairly similar to SSSM (Sky Sports Super Manager), but the number of players allowed from one country at any time will be increased as the competition progresses to allow for the reduced number of countries.

Players will be able to make transfers at anytime they wish, but at certain times the number of transfers available will be limited.

You also have the option of splitting the player list into the full list or a group of playmakers that you have selected. The playmakers are basically the best / most famous players in the relevant positions and makes navigating to find the players everyone wants and knows about that much easier. Sky will update this list as the competition progresses to allow for the competition surprises that always crop up.

All users who registered for SSSM will be able to use the same username and password they set-up for that game. That means all they have to do is set up their new teams. The game will be pay to play at a cost of £4.99 for each team entered. To join the FISO Super League just enter the PIN 723143 in the Leagues/My Super Leagues section.

PlayerBoss World Cup

John Beresford's PlayerBoss World Cup is FREE to play. The manager has £80m to pick a squad of 16 players (no restrictions on nationality). They also have a transfer allocation of 10 for the duration of the tournament. First prize will receive £500 cash. Second prize will receive a signed England shirt from an England international. Third Prize is a signed ball by a Pro. Form a mini-league with your friends, family or workmates and compete against current and former international players (Peter Beardsley, Stuart Pearce, Nolberto Solano, Marian Pahars, Les Ferdinand, Barry Venison etc). Entry deadline 12.15p.m. Friday 31 May.

The Times Fantasy League World Cup 2002

Entry is just £5 with the competition winner driving off with a £61,000 Maserati 3200GT!  Second and third prizes are £1,000 and £500 and there are signed England shirts on offer for the winners of each of the 5 game phases. Simply select a team of 11 players by choosing a maximum of only one player from each country taking part in the competition in a 4-4-2 formation (one goalkeeper, four defenders, four midfielders and two forwards). Once the competition has started, you may make 12 transfers to your team throughout the whole tournament (a maximum of six per game phase). The points system is pretty much as per usual Times Fantasy League but points are doubled during the knock out stages and there is a golden goal bonus.

The rules are that there is no relaxation of the 1 player per country rule which means that when the final transfer window closes 30 mins before the first quarter final kicks off, everyone will have no more than 8 active players left in their 11 man team.

The transfer windows (where a maximum of 6 transfers in any window and 12 overall are allowed) are:

1. 12:00 Fri 31st May - 11:59 Wed 5th Jun
2. 12:00 Wed 5th Jun - 06:59 Tue 11th Jun
3. 07:00 Tue 11th Jun - 06:59 Sat 15th Jun
4. 07:00 Sat 15th Jun - 06:59 Fri 21st Jun

Seems quite an interesting system and means some thought shocked 8O is required before using those transfers. You can change your team as much as you want prior to the noon deadline on 31 May so early entries are encouraged. Free Super League facility - to enter the FISO Super League and to see further tactical tips click here.
